The most romantic things to do in Tokyo are set by the hour and the season. In the morning, Hamarikyu Gardens opens at 9:00, and the water bus from Asakusa lands you inside it after about 35 minutes on the river for ¥1,180, garden admission included. In the evening, Tokyo Tower's Top Deck stays open until 22:45 and the New York Bar on the 52nd floor of Park Hyatt Tokyo opens at 17:00. In autumn 2026, two of the city's old daimyo gardens open after dark: Koishikawa Korakuen from November 13 to 24, and Rikugien from November 25 to December 6.
This article sorts those hours into a plan you can choose from, season by season, with two sample days for a couple. We checked each price, opening hour and date on the official websites of the towers, the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association, the boat operators, Mori Building and the hotel on October 15, 2026. The sources are listed at the end. If Kyoto is also on your route, the same approach is in romantic things to do in Kyoto.
Key points
- For the city at night, Tokyo Tower's Top Deck Tour is ¥3,300 per adult online, with last entry at 22:15. SHIBUYA SKY's open roof is open until 22:30, last entry 21:20, and sells timed tickets two weeks ahead. TOKYO SKYTREE's two decks start from ¥3,000 per adult, with the price set by the day.
- Autumn 2026 garden night openings: Koishikawa Korakuen, November 13 to 24, 18:00 to 21:00; Rikugien, November 25 to December 6, 18:00 to 20:30. Both are ¥1,000 in advance online and ¥1,200 on the day.
- The Roppongi Hills Keyakizaka illumination runs from November 5 to December 25, 2026, about 400 m of trees in blue and white light.
- On the water: the Tokyo Cruise water bus from Asakusa to Hamarikyu is ¥1,180 and sold only at the Asakusa ticket machine. Funasei's shared yakatabune dinner boats take bookings from two people, at ¥14,000 to ¥23,900 per person with dinner and drinks.
- The New York Bar takes no reservations. A cover charge of ¥3,300 per person applies from 18:30, when the music starts.
TOKYO FOR COUPLES BY SEASON AND HOUR
Tokyo is large enough that a romantic day here is mostly a question of order: a garden while it is quiet, a long afternoon at the hotel, a view at dusk, then dinner and a late drink. The gardens close at 17:00, the observation decks stay open until 22:00 or later, and the special night openings run for only a few weeks a year. The table below puts the confirmed options for each season into three parts of the day. Dates are the 2026 dates; the 2027 ones are announced by each operator on its own site, and we check them when they appear.
| Season | Morning | Afternoon | Evening and night |
|---|---|---|---|
| Spring, March to May | Hamarikyu or Rikugien from 9:00 | The water bus from Asakusa down the Sumida River to Hamarikyu | Tokyo Tower, SHIBUYA SKY or TOKYO SKYTREE after dark; the New York Bar from 17:00 |
| Summer, June to September | A garden at 9:00, before the heat | Indoors at the hotel; SHIBUYA SKY's indoor gallery on the 46th floor if the roof is closed | A shared yakatabune dinner on Tokyo Bay; the decks until late |
| Autumn, October to early December | Hamarikyu, Rikugien and Koishikawa Korakuen from 9:00 | The water bus to Hamarikyu, leaving Asakusa at 11:40 or 14:20 | Koishikawa Korakuen after dark, November 13 to 24; Rikugien, November 25 to December 6; Keyakizaka from November 5 |
| Winter, December to February | Gardens from 9:00, closed December 29 to January 1 | A sunset slot at SHIBUYA SKY | Keyakizaka until December 25; Tokyo Tower's Main Deck until 23:00 |
For the general choice between the two busiest seasons, cherry blossom against autumn leaves sets out the trade.
TOKYO FROM ABOVE AT NIGHT
Three observation decks suit a couple, and each is a different evening. Tokyo Tower is the classic one and stays open latest. SHIBUYA SKY puts you on the open roof of Shibuya Scramble Square. TOKYO SKYTREE is the highest, with a restaurant below the deck. These are the figures on each operator's own site on October 15, 2026.
| Deck | Hours | Last entry | Adult ticket |
|---|---|---|---|
| Tokyo Tower, Main Deck (150 m) | 9:00 to 23:00 | 22:30 | ¥1,500 |
| Tokyo Tower, Top Deck Tour (150 m and 250 m) | 9:00 to 22:45 | 22:15 | ¥3,300 online, ¥3,500 at the counter |
| SHIBUYA SKY | 10:00 to 22:30 | 21:20 | Set by time slot; shown when you choose the slot |
| TOKYO SKYTREE, Tembo Deck and Tembo Galleria | 10:00 to 22:00 on the day we checked | 21:00 | From ¥3,000 online, set by the day |
Tokyo Tower
The Main Deck at 150 m is open from 9:00 to 23:00, with last entry at 22:30, for ¥1,500 per adult. The Top Deck Tour adds the deck at 250 m and runs until 22:45, with last entry at 22:15; it is ¥3,300 per adult online and ¥3,500 at the counter. For a couple, the TOKYO DIAMOND TOUR adds a lounge to both decks at ¥7,000 per adult, with departures on the hour from 12:00 to 18:00. The tower notes that the Top Deck can close in bad weather, and that the Main Deck may stop admitting earlier when it is crowded.
SHIBUYA SKY
SHIBUYA SKY is the open roof of Shibuya Scramble Square, open from 10:00 to 22:30 with last entry at 21:20. Tickets are for a 20-minute entry window and go on sale at midnight Japan time two weeks before the date. The price depends on the time slot and on where you buy. Web tickets can be cancelled free until the day before; on the day, only if the roof is closed at your entry time.
The roof closes for strong wind, rain, snow, approaching thunderstorms and extreme heat, while the indoor gallery on the 46th floor stays open. Bags, hats, tripods and earphones are not allowed on the roof and go into the lockers on the 46th floor; phones and cameras small enough for a pocket or a neck strap are fine. There is no time limit once you are in, so a couple can watch the sky change from late afternoon into night on one ticket.
TOKYO SKYTREE
The combined ticket covers the Tembo Deck at 350 m and the Tembo Galleria at 450 m, from ¥3,000 per adult online. The price is set for each day, and buying at the fourth-floor counter or the machines adds ¥500 per ticket. On the day we checked, the decks were open from 10:00 to 22:00, with last entry at 21:00. Sky Restaurant 634, at 345 m, needs a Tembo Deck ticket, and its private GRAND ROOM is offered by the tower for anniversaries.
GARDENS AFTER DARK IN AUTUMN 2026
Tokyo's gardens normally close at 17:00. In autumn, the Tokyo Metropolitan Park Association reopens two of them for a few weeks after dark, with the maples lit and projections on old walls and bridges. Entry on these evenings is by the night ticket only, including for anyone holding a pass.
| Place | Dates | Evening hours | Ticket per adult |
|---|---|---|---|
| Koishikawa Korakuen | November 13 to 24 | 18:00 to 21:00, last entry 20:00 | ¥1,000 in advance online, ¥1,200 on the day |
| Rikugien | November 25 to December 6 | 18:00 to 20:30, last entry 19:30 | ¥1,000 in advance online, ¥1,200 on the day |
| Roppongi Hills, Keyakizaka illumination | November 5 to December 25 | Not given in the announcement | A street, no ticket |
Koishikawa Korakuen
From November 13 to 24, 2026, the garden closes at 17:00 and reopens at 18:00 until 21:00, with last entry at 20:00. Guests enter by the West Gate and leave by the East Gate. The lights pick out the island and the single pine, the Karamon gate and the ropes already tied on the trees for snow, and two projections play on the full-moon bridge and the old earthen wall. A teahouse opens only on these evenings, serving matcha with a seasonal sweet until 20:00. Advance tickets are sold online until 23:59 on November 12; on the night, tickets are sold online and, in limited numbers and for cash only, at the West Gate from 18:00 to 20:00.
Rikugien
Rikugien follows from November 25 to December 6, 2026, open from 18:00 to 20:30 with last entry at 19:30, after closing at 17:00 for the day visitors. The maples are lit across the garden, a storehouse from the Iwasaki family's time and a bamboo grove carry projections, and a teahouse serves matcha and a sweet. Advance tickets are online only; the number of tickets for each evening is capped, and the sale date had not been announced when we checked. Buying online also gets you the priority lane at the Main Gate.
Keyakizaka in Roppongi
For a walk after dinner, Mori Building lights the zelkova trees along Keyakizaka in Roppongi Hills from November 5 to December 25, 2026, about 400 m of trees in some 970,000 blue and white lights, with a Christmas market in the plaza. The announcement did not give the lighting hours.
THE RIVER AND THE BAY BY BOAT
The water bus to Hamarikyu
The Tokyo Cruise water bus runs down the Sumida River from Asakusa and lets you off inside Hamarikyu Gardens, about 35 minutes for ¥1,180 per adult, with the garden's admission included. Tickets for this route are sold only at the ticket machine at the Asakusa pier and cannot be bought in advance. In October 2026 the regular sailings leave at 11:40 and 14:20, with the 14:20 off on October 29; in November they run on most days, with the 11:40 off on November 4, 7, 8, 12 and 16, and the 14:20 off on November 17, 18, 24 and 27. The boats can be cancelled for weather. The garden itself is open from 9:00 to 17:00, last entry 16:30, and is ¥300 if you come in through its gates.
A yakatabune dinner on Tokyo Bay
Yakatabune are the low roofed boats where dinner is served on tatami as the boat cruises the bay. Funasei, which sails from Shinagawa, runs shared boats on some evenings that take bookings from two people, with tables for two. The courses are tempura and sashimi, and the four price levels are ¥14,000, ¥16,800, ¥20,800 and ¥23,900 per person, covering the boat, the meal, free-flow drinks and tax. Its standard course runs about two and a half hours, with about 55 minutes moored off Odaiba and a run up the Sumida River to Eitai Bridge for the view of SKYTREE. Every boat has an open viewing deck. Whether your boat has sunken seating or chairs is decided on the day, and both let you sit with your legs down.
If you would like the water to yourselves, a private boat for two is on our page for a private cruise on Tokyo Bay.
DINNER AT A COUNTER
In Tokyo the most memorable dinner for two is often at a counter of eight to twelve seats, sushi or kaiseki, where the chef cooks in front of you. We plan it as the fixed point of the evening. Some counters seat everyone at one start time, so the view and the garden are placed around that hour. Allergies and dislikes go to the restaurant in Japanese well before the day, since an omakase menu is prepared in advance. And a counter is shoulder to shoulder, so for a couple who would like to talk quietly, we look for the end seats or a restaurant with a small private room.
The best counters are also the hardest to get into. Many open their books only one or two months ahead and fill them with regulars first, and lunch is often the easier way in.
How these restaurants take bookings, and why so many do not take them online from abroad, is set out in how Tokyo's best tables actually work. For dietary needs, see food allergies in Japan.
A BAR ABOVE THE CITY
The New York Bar is on the 52nd floor of Park Hyatt Tokyo in Shinjuku, joined to the New York Grill. It opens daily at 17:00, with last orders for drinks at midnight and for food at 23:00. It takes no reservations. From 18:30 there is live jazz and a cover charge of ¥3,300 per person; the first set is instrumental, from 18:30 to 19:00, and the band plays sets until 23:45. Guests must be 20 or over, and the bar asks for proof of age. Shorts, beach sandals, sportswear and sleeveless tops are not allowed.
Arriving at 17:00 gives you the window seats as the light goes, before the music and the cover charge. Staying on after 18:30 gives you the band against the night view. Both are good evenings.
TWO DAYS FOR TWO
These are two ways we would put a Tokyo day together for a couple in autumn 2026, one in mid November and one in early December. Both keep the afternoon free and use a weekday.
A day in mid November
- 11:40 The water bus from Asakusa, avoiding the closed dates, landing inside Hamarikyu about 35 minutes later.
- 12:30 A slow walk round the garden, then lunch nearby.
- Afternoon Back to the hotel. Nothing planned.
- 17:00 The New York Bar as it opens, for the view at dusk.
- 18:30 Koishikawa Korakuen after dark, with matcha at the teahouse before its 20:00 last order. This works from November 13 to 24.
- 20:30 A late counter dinner.
The order matters on this day. The garden's last entry is 20:00, so dinner comes after it, and a restaurant with a single early seating does not fit. We choose the restaurant for its later start.
A day in early December
- Morning Slow, at the hotel.
- Late afternoon A SHIBUYA SKY slot timed for sunset, bought at midnight two weeks before.
- 18:00 Rikugien as it reopens for the evening, until the last entry at 19:30. This works from November 25 to December 6.
- 20:00 Dinner.
- 22:00 Tokyo Tower's Top Deck, with last entry at 22:15, or a walk along Keyakizaka.
If the wind closes the roof at Shibuya, the 46th floor is still open, and the ticket can be cancelled free before your entry time. For the quieter hours of the busiest weeks, how to avoid the crowds in Japan has the general rules we work by.
WHERE THIS FITS IN A LONGER TRIP
Two or three of these evenings are enough for four nights in Tokyo. For a honeymoon, the full route from Tokyo through Hakone to Kyoto is in the luxury Japan honeymoon itinerary, and for a trip built around a birthday, an anniversary or another occasion, see celebration trips in Japan. If you are planning a proposal, proposal ideas in Japan covers the settings, and an anniversary trip to Japan covers the longer version. A night at a ryokan with its own bath is an easy addition from Tokyo; see ryokan with private onsen near Tokyo.
STAYGO plans private journeys across Japan from Tokyo. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for your group, for a trip of 7 to 14 days; longer or more complex trips are quoted as Bespoke. We choose the days around the closures, the sale dates and the weather, pass your requests to the restaurants and boat operators in Japanese, and give you each evening in order. You pay the towers, gardens, boats, restaurants and bars directly at their own prices, with no commission or markup from us.
