The most romantic things to do in Kyoto are set by the hour and the season. In the early morning, Kiyomizu-dera opens its gates at 6:00. By day, the Sagano Romantic Train runs 23 minutes along the Hozu gorge from Saga to Kameoka for ¥880 per adult, and the Hozugawa boat brings you back down 16 km of river to Arashiyama in about two hours for ¥6,000 per adult, or ¥144,000 for a boat of your own. In the evening, from May 1 the restaurants along the Kamo River serve dinner on platforms over the water, and in autumn 2026 Kodaiji stays open after dark from October 23 to December 13, with last entry at 21:30.

This article sorts those hours into a plan you can choose from, season by season, with two sample days for a couple. We checked each fare, timetable, season and night opening on the official websites of the operators, temples and the Kyoto city and prefecture tourism bodies on October 14, 2026. The sources are listed at the end. Where to base yourselves in the city is covered separately in where to stay in Kyoto.

Key points

  • Ride the Sagano Romantic Train from Saga to Kameoka and take the Hozugawa boat back down to Arashiyama. The train is ¥880 per adult each way, the boat ¥6,000 per adult, and a private boat ¥144,000, or ¥162,000 in peak periods that include all of November.
  • The current Sagano trains retire on December 29, 2026, and a new train is due in spring 2027. From October 24 to December 29, 2026, the gorge is lit from 16:30 until the last train, with extra evening trains on set dates.
  • Kamo River platform dining ran from May 1 to October 15 in 2026, and the riverside platforms at Kibune from May 1 to September 30. When it rains, both seat you indoors.
  • Autumn 2026 night openings with dates and fees published: Kodaiji, October 23 to December 13, ¥800; Kitano Tenmangu's maple garden, November 13 to December 6, ¥1,500 with tea and a sweet; Eikando, November 20 to December 6, ¥1,000; Kiyomizu-dera, November 21 to 30.
  • Train seats go on sale at midnight one month before the date. Online places on the boat close the day before. Eikando sells no tickets in advance.

KYOTO FOR COUPLES BY SEASON AND HOUR

Most of what makes Kyoto feel private for two people happens at the edges of the day. Kiyomizu-dera opens at 6:00 all year, the river trips run from mid-morning into the afternoon, and the gardens that open after dark close their gates between 20:00 and 22:00. The table below puts the confirmed options for each season into three parts of the day. Dates are the 2026 dates; the 2027 ones are announced by each operator and temple on its own site, and we check them when they appear.

For the general choice between the two busiest seasons, cherry blossom against autumn leaves sets out the trade.

THE GORGE BY TRAIN AND BY BOAT

The Hozu gorge runs west from Arashiyama. You see it twice: once from above on the Sagano Romantic Train, and once from the water on the Hozugawa boat. Doing both in one day is the classic way, and the order matters. Take the train out to Kameoka, then let the boat carry you back to Arashiyama.

The Sagano Romantic Train

The train runs between Torokko Saga and Torokko Kameoka, stopping at Torokko Arashiyama and Torokko Hozukyo. On the 2026 timetable the regular trains leave Saga on the hour, at 9:02 and then hourly to 16:02, and reach Kameoka 23 minutes later; the last regular train back leaves Kameoka at 16:30. The fare is the same for any distance: ¥880 for an adult and ¥440 for a child aged 6 to 11.

Car 5, called the Rich car, has no window glass and a glass roof, so the air of the gorge comes straight in. It has the same seats as the other four cars and is chosen when the seats are booked. In rain you can get wet, umbrellas are not allowed in the car, and the operator does not refund or change tickets on the day because of rain, so for a couple who would mind, one of the closed cars is the safer choice.

Seats go on sale at midnight Japan time, one month before the date of travel, on the operator's own reservation site, up to eight people per booking. Refunds are free until 23:59 the day before; on the day itself the train cannot be changed or refunded. Some same-day seats are sold at the station windows from about 8:35, and standing tickets once the reserved seats are gone.

Check the calendar before fixing the day. In 2026 the train did not run from January 1 to February 28 or on December 30 and 31, and it was also closed on certain Wednesdays outside the busy weeks, including October 14 and 21 and December 16. The current trains retire on December 29, 2026. The operator has announced a new train for spring 2027; its fares and seating had not been published when we checked.

The Hozugawa river boat

The Hozugawa boat runs from Kameoka to Arashiyama, about 16 km of river in about two hours, steered by boatmen with poles and oars. On weekdays from March 10 to December 13, 2026, boats left hourly from 9:00 to 15:00; on weekends and public holidays they leave once each boat fills. From January 5 to March 9 the timetable drops to four sailings, at 10:00, 11:30, 13:00 and 14:30. The service closes from December 29 to January 4.

A seat on the shared boat costs ¥6,000 per adult and ¥4,500 per child. Each shared boat takes 24 people, so on weekends you will travel with others. For a couple, the better version is a chartered boat for up to 17 people: ¥144,000 per boat, or ¥162,000 in the peak periods, which in 2026 included late April to May 6, the Obon weeks in August, the September and October holiday weekends, all of November and December 1 to 6. On weekdays from the second Monday of December to March 9, the winter charter is ¥144,000.

Before you plan around it:

Combined, the day reads simply: a late-morning train from Saga to Kameoka, a short transfer to the landing, and an early-afternoon boat that brings you back into Arashiyama with the light going gold. If the train is full, the landing is also reached by JR.

DINNER OVER THE RIVER

From spring into autumn, Kyoto's restaurants build wooden platforms out over the water, and dinner on one of them is the most Kyoto of evenings for two. There are two very different versions.

The Kamo River platforms

In the centre of the city, the restaurants of Kamigiyacho, Pontocho, Saisekicho and Shimokiyamachi set their platforms, called noryo-yuka, over the west bank of the Kamo River. The association of these restaurants gives the 2026 season as May 1 to October 15, and notes that some close their platforms at the end of September. Some serve lunch on the platform as well as dinner; hours vary by restaurant. If it rains, you are seated in a room indoors. The association asks guests to book with the restaurant directly and points out that cancelling on the day is poor manners, which is worth knowing if your plans are loose.

The platforms face east across the river to the Higashiyama hills, so an evening table starts in daylight and finishes after dark.

Kibune in the hills

Kibune, in the hills north of the city, is the cooler version. Here the platforms, called kawadoko, sit low over a mountain stream, close enough to hear the water under the table. The Kyoto city and prefecture night guide lists the 2026 Kibune season as May 1 to September 30, and the Kamo River as May 1 to October 15. Takao, west of Kibune, opens earlier, from April 1 to the end of November, with evening service only until the end of September.

Kibune suits lunch on a hot day, and pairs with Kifune Shrine, which is open from 6:00 to 20:00 between May 1 and November 30. In 2026 the shrine lit the bamboo of its Tanabata decorations from sunset until 20:00, July 1 to August 15. Prices on both rivers vary by restaurant; we quote the ones we would suggest when we have your dates.

AUTUMN 2026 NIGHT OPENINGS

In autumn, several temples and shrines light their gardens and stay open after dark. These are the openings that had published 2026 dates and fees on their own websites on October 14, 2026.

Kodaiji

Kodaiji, in Higashiyama, has the longest night opening in this table, seven weeks, with the lights on from 17:00. The day ticket and the night ticket are the same price and visitors are not cleared out at dusk, so you can arrive in the late afternoon and watch the lights come on. Once you leave by the exit, the same ticket does not let you back in. The temple notes some restrictions on November 12 and 13.

The lit gorge from the train

From October 24, the operator lights the maples and hillsides along the line from dusk. Any train from the 16:30 departure from Kameoka onwards passes the lights. On set dates there are extra evening trains: the Sagano 81 leaves Saga at 17:10 and reaches Kameoka at 17:38, and the Sagano 82 returns at 17:43, reaching Saga at 18:12. These run from October 24 to December 13 and on December 26 and 27. From November 14 to 30 and on December 5 and 6, a later pair runs too, leaving Saga at 18:26 and returning from Kameoka at 18:59. This is the last season the lights will be seen from the current trains.

Kitano Tenmangu and Eikando

Kitano Tenmangu's Momiji-en is the maple garden on the shrine's historic Odoi earthworks, and the ticket includes tea and a sweet. Eikando, east of the city, has the shortest window, a little over two weeks. Its day viewing and night viewing are sold separately, the visitors are changed between the two, and no tickets are sold in advance, so you buy on the evening itself. The temple also warns that in late November it may close the ticket desk early when the grounds are full.

Shoren-in, which describes its own lighting as quiet, had not published autumn 2026 night dates on its site when we checked. Its summer opening ran from July 17 to August 23, 2026, at ¥1,500. If its autumn dates appear before your trip, we will tell you.

TWO DAYS FOR TWO

These are two ways we would put a Kyoto day together for a couple, one in May and one in late November. Both keep the afternoon free. On a weekend the boat leaves when full, and in November everything is busier, so we would use a weekday for either.

A day in May

Avoid a Wednesday: in May and June 2026 the train was closed on several of them. If you would prefer the hills to the city, swap the dinner for lunch on a Kibune platform and move the gorge to the next day.

A day in late November

Every evening here has its own last entry, and they are not late by European standards. We set the dinner around the temple, so you are never choosing between them at 20:00. For the quieter hours of the busiest weeks, how to avoid the crowds in Japan has the general rules we work by.

WHERE THIS FITS IN A LONGER TRIP

Two or three of these hours are enough for a Kyoto stay of four nights. If you are planning a honeymoon, the evening we would arrange first in Kyoto is the garden of Murin-an after it closes to the public; it is described on our page for a private evening at Murin-an, and the whole route from Tokyo through Hakone to Kyoto is in the luxury Japan honeymoon itinerary. The things in this article sit around that evening: a river morning, a platform dinner, a temple after dark.

STAYGO plans and arranges private journeys across Japan from Tokyo. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for your group, for a trip of 7 to 14 days; longer or more complex trips are quoted as Bespoke. We arrange the train seats, the boat and the restaurants in your names, choose the days around the closures and the weather, and give you the evening in order. You pay the operators, restaurants and temples directly at their own prices, with no commission or markup from us.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read each operator's, temple's and shrine's own website, their published timetables and calendars, and the night guide run by Kyoto Prefecture, Kyoto City and their tourism associations on October 14, 2026. The Sagano fares are the figures the operator's fare page displays from its own booking system. We did not contact the operators. We did not use figures from booking sites, guidebooks or press coverage. Seasons, timetables and night openings change each year; the dates here are the 2026 dates.

QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK

What is the most romantic thing to do in Kyoto?

For half a day, the Sagano Romantic Train out to Kameoka and the Hozugawa boat back to Arashiyama, on a chartered boat if you want the river to yourselves. For an evening, dinner on a Kamo River platform between May 1 and October 15, or a temple garden lit after dark in autumn.

Can you book the Sagano Romantic Train in advance?

Yes. Seats go on sale at midnight Japan time one month before the date, including seats in car 5, the open Rich car. The adult fare is ¥880 each way. Refunds are free until 23:59 the day before; nothing can be changed on the day.

Does the Hozugawa boat run in the rain?

Yes, with a canopy fitted. It does not run in storms or when the river is high, and the operator keeps to a water level limit of 65 cm at the gauge at Hozu.

When can you eat on the river platforms in Kyoto?

In 2026 the Kamo River platforms ran from May 1 to October 15, with some restaurants finishing at the end of September, and Kibune from May 1 to September 30. In rain, both seat you indoors.
