An anniversary trip to Japan comes down to three decisions: the season, the room for the night that matters most, and how the hotel or restaurant hears about the occasion. The season sets what you see. In an average year, cherry blossoms reach full bloom around March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, and the maples turn red around November 28 in Tokyo and December 5 in Kyoto. The room is usually a ryokan with its own open-air bath; at Arcana Izu, every one of the 16 rooms has a private bath of flowing hot spring water. The celebration depends on what each place states: Gora Kadan in Hakone, for example, serves a small celebratory dish or drink at dinner and gives a framed photograph to guests marking an anniversary, a birthday or a honeymoon, at no charge.
This article sets out anniversary ideas in Japan for a wedding anniversary or a milestone birthday: when to go, where to spend the night itself, what hotels and operators say they will do, and how a trip of 7, 10 or 14 days can be shaped around the date. We checked each date, room and condition on the official websites of the Japan Meteorological Agency, the festival organisers, the hotels, ryokan and operators on October 15, 2026. The sources are listed at the end. What a hotel or restaurant prepares for a celebration is its own decision, so we quote only what each one publishes.
Key points
- On the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 averages, cherry blossoms reach full bloom on March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, and maples turn red around November 28 in Tokyo and December 5 in Kyoto. In 2026 the blossoms peaked early, on March 28 and March 30.
- Some events keep the same dates every year: Kyoto's Aoi Matsuri on May 15, the Gion Matsuri through July with its processions on July 17 and 24, the Gozan Okuribi fires on August 16 and the Jidai Matsuri on October 22. The 2027 Sapporo Snow Festival runs from February 4 to 11.
- For the anniversary night, a ryokan room with its own open-air bath: any room at Arcana Izu, the open-air bath rooms at Gora Kadan in Hakone, Villa Tenko at Asaba in Shuzenji, or two of the nine rooms at Seryo in Ohara, north of Kyoto.
- A few places publish what they do for a celebration. Gora Kadan gives a small dish or drink and a framed photo at no charge, with cake from ¥4,800. Hotel New Otani Tokyo sells anniversary cakes to staying guests from ¥3,850, ordered three days ahead. A private Tokyo Bay cruise for two starts at ¥99,000 for an hour.
- Seven days covers Tokyo, one ryokan night and Kyoto. With ten or fourteen days, the anniversary can fall on a night with no train to catch the day before or after.
CHOOSING THE SEASON
If your date is fixed, the season chooses itself, and the question becomes what that month offers. If it can move by a few weeks, as a milestone birthday trip often can, it is worth planning around one of the moments below. Blossom and leaf dates are averages: the Japan Meteorological Agency records them each year at set trees in each city, and the real date moves from year to year. The Kyoto festival dates are fixed.
| Season | Fixed dates | Blossoms and leaves, average year |
|---|---|---|
| Spring, March to May | Aoi Matsuri, Kyoto, May 15 | Blossoms open around March 24 in Tokyo and March 26 in Kyoto; full bloom around March 31 and April 4 |
| Summer, June to August | Gion Matsuri, Kyoto, July 1 to 31, processions July 17 and 24; Gozan Okuribi, Kyoto, August 16 | None in this season |
| Autumn, October to early December | Jidai Matsuri, Kyoto, October 22 | Maples red around November 28 in Tokyo and December 5 in Kyoto; in 2025, November 23 and December 10 |
| Winter, December to February | Sapporo Snow Festival, February 4 to 11, 2027 | None in this season |
The averages are a guide and no more. In 2026 full bloom came on March 28 in Tokyo and March 30 in Kyoto, three and five days before the average; in 2025 the Kyoto maples turned five days after it. For a spring or autumn anniversary we keep one day in Kyoto unplanned, so the best day can be used when it comes. For the wider choice between the two, see cherry blossom against autumn leaves. In summer, the evenings in Kyoto are the part to plan around; romantic things to do in Kyoto has the river platform dinners and the night openings.
A ROOM WITH ITS OWN OPEN-AIR BATH
The night of the anniversary itself works best somewhere you do not need to leave: a ryokan room with its own open-air bath, with dinner served at the inn. These are four we checked, two in Izu, one in Hakone and one in the hills north of Kyoto.
| Ryokan | Where | Rooms with an open-air bath | Worth knowing |
|---|---|---|---|
| Arcana Izu | Izu, Shizuoka | All 16, each with flowing hot spring water; suites from 51.1 m² to 86.1 m² | Guests aged 12 and over; two guests per room except one suite type; check-out usually 13:00 |
| Gora Kadan | Hakone, Kanagawa | The four Japanese rooms listed with an open-air bath, and the Aoi, Fuji and Ume suites | Dinner in the room at 18:00 or 19:00; no age limit |
| Asaba | Shuzenji, Izu | Villa Tenko, 220 m², with an outdoor stone bath; Hagoromo, 126 m², with a half-open-air bath facing the Noh stage | Every room has a hot spring bath; check-in 14:30 to 18:00; dinner in the room |
| Seryo | Ohara, north of Kyoto | 2 of 9 rooms: Sakura, 55 m², and Kaede | The bath can be used at any time from check-in to check-out |
Rates for these rooms change by date and are usually quoted per person; we check them for your dates. For more inns and the difference between a flowing and a recirculated bath, see ryokan with a private onsen near Tokyo and Kyoto ryokan with a private onsen.
TELLING THE HOTEL ABOUT THE ANNIVERSARY
In Japan the occasion is usually mentioned when the room or the table is requested, and what follows depends on the place. Some publish what they offer. Many do not, and then the honest answer is to ask. These are the ones that state it on their own sites.
Gora Kadan in Hakone
Gora Kadan's FAQ answers the question directly. For guests celebrating an anniversary, a birthday or a honeymoon, the inn serves a bite of sekihan, rice cooked red with beans, or a drink at dinner, and takes a commemorative photograph that it gives you in a frame, at no charge. For a fee it arranges a bouquet, a whole cake or a fruit platter, requested at least seven days ahead. It can place a message card in the room, and a gift sent to the inn in advance can be waiting there. Its cakes start with a 10 cm shortcake at ¥4,800 including tax, ordered by the day before and not made on Tuesdays or Wednesdays; flower arrangements start at ¥5,500 with a week's notice.
Arcana Izu
Arcana Izu's FAQ says it can make both paid and free arrangements for anniversaries, and asks guests to contact the hotel for the details. It does not list them on the site, so we ask when we send the request for the room.
Hotel New Otani Tokyo
The New Otani publishes an anniversary menu on its room service pages, for guests already staying at the hotel. A 12 cm strawberry shortcake for two to four people is ¥3,850, a melon shortcake ¥8,800 and a chocolate message plate ¥550; candles and a message card are free, and a service charge is added. Orders close three days before check-in, and cancelling after 18:00 on the day before costs the full amount. From December 20 to 25 the usual cakes are replaced by a smaller Christmas cake. The cake is brought while you are in the room and cannot be taken out of it.
A private cruise on Tokyo Bay
Anniversary Cruise has a plan for two on Tokyo Bay. A 60 minute charter on one of its smaller boats is ¥99,000 including tax, with a half bottle of Moët & Chandon, soft drinks, a framed photograph sent afterwards and help preparing a surprise. Cake starts at ¥6,600 and bouquets at ¥5,500, both extra. Cruises run between 11:00 and 22:00 and usually sail in rain; if the captain cancels for the weather, the operator says notice comes by 16:00 the day before. Cancellation charges start at 10% more than 30 days ahead and reach 100% on the day.
Murin-an in Kyoto
The garden of Murin-an can be taken for a private evening after it closes to the public, and its page lists an anniversary as one of the uses. From October to March the evening runs from 17:00 to 22:00, and from April to September from 18:00. The base fee is ¥300,000 including tax. Applications open 180 days ahead and close one month before, with a short written outline of the evening, and cancelling within 10 days costs the full fee. It is described on our page for a private evening at Murin-an.
What to tell them
Wherever you stay or eat, the same few facts help: the occasion and which year it is, whether it is a surprise for one of you, any food either of you does not eat, and the time you expect to arrive, since ryokan serve dinner at set hours. We pass these on with your request and tell you what each place has said in reply. What a hotel or restaurant prepares remains its own decision, and we do not promise anything it has not offered in writing.
HOW MANY DAYS
An anniversary changes one thing in an ordinary itinerary. The date itself should fall on a night with nothing to catch the next morning, ideally at the ryokan or on a free evening in Kyoto. These are three shapes we use, each starting and ending in Tokyo.
| Length | Shape | The anniversary night |
|---|---|---|
| 7 days, 6 nights | Tokyo, 3 nights; a ryokan in Hakone or Izu, 1 night; Kyoto, 2 nights | The ryokan night |
| 10 days, 9 nights | Tokyo, 3 nights; Hakone or Izu, 2 nights; Kyoto, 4 nights | The second ryokan night, after a day with nothing booked |
| 14 days, 13 nights | Tokyo, 3 nights; Hakone or Izu, 2 nights; Kyoto, 4 nights; Ohara, 1 night; Tokyo, 3 nights | The ryokan night in Izu or Ohara, or a private evening in Kyoto |
With seven days we keep to three places, because each move between cities takes most of a morning or an afternoon. With ten, the second ryokan night means the anniversary dinner falls on a day you woke up at the inn. Fourteen days leaves room for Kyoto's evenings and for a slower end in Tokyo, described in romantic things to do in Tokyo. Day by day versions of the same route are in our 14 day itinerary and the luxury Japan honeymoon itinerary.
OTHER OCCASIONS FOR TWO
If the trip is also the moment for a question, proposal ideas in Japan covers the places and the timing. If it is the first trip after the wedding, start with the honeymoon itinerary. Our page for celebration trips sets out how we plan a journey around a date.
WHERE STAYGO COMES IN
STAYGO plans private journeys across Japan from Tokyo. For an anniversary we choose the season and the rooms with you, send your requests to the hotels, ryokan and restaurants with the occasion noted, and tell you what each one has offered. You pay them directly, at their own prices, with no commission or markup from us. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for your group, for a trip of 7 to 14 days; longer or more complex trips are quoted as Bespoke.
SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED
We read the Japan Meteorological Agency's phenology pages, the Kyoto City tourism site, the Sapporo Snow Festival site and the official pages of each hotel, ryokan and operator on October 15, 2026. The maple averages are worked out from the agency's table, which gives each year's date and its difference from the 1991 to 2020 average. We did not contact the hotels or operators, and we did not use figures from booking sites, guidebooks or press coverage. Prices and conditions are those shown on October 15, 2026, and can change.

QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK
When is the best time for an anniversary trip to Japan?
If your date can move, late March to early April for cherry blossoms, or late November to early December for the maples. In an average year the blossoms reach full bloom on March 31 in Tokyo and April 4 in Kyoto, and the maples turn red around November 28 in Tokyo and December 5 in Kyoto. If the date is fixed, each season has something: the Gion Matsuri fills July in Kyoto, and the Sapporo Snow Festival runs from February 4 to 11, 2027.
Do hotels in Japan do anything for anniversaries?
Some say so on their own sites. Gora Kadan in Hakone serves a small celebratory dish or drink at dinner and gives a framed photograph at no charge, and arranges cake and flowers for a fee. Arcana Izu says it can make paid and free arrangements. Many places publish nothing, and what they prepare is their own choice; we ask when we send your request.
Which ryokan have a private open-air bath for two?
All 16 rooms at Arcana Izu have their own open-air bath of flowing hot spring water. Gora Kadan in Hakone, Asaba in Shuzenji and Seryo in Ohara, north of Kyoto, have some rooms with one.
How many days do you need for an anniversary trip to Japan?
Seven days covers Tokyo, one ryokan night and Kyoto. Ten days allows a second ryokan night, so the anniversary dinner does not fall on a travel day. Fourteen days adds more of Kyoto and a slower end in Tokyo.
Can we order an anniversary cake at a hotel in Tokyo?
At Hotel New Otani Tokyo, staying guests can order a 12 cm strawberry shortcake for ¥3,850 plus a service charge, at least three days before check-in. Other hotels set their own terms.
