The ten-day version of a luxury Japan honeymoon is three nights in Tokyo, two nights in a Hakone ryokan where the room has its own open-air bath, and four nights in Kyoto, flying home from Kansai on day ten. The fourteen-day version keeps that spine, adds a night in Tokyo, and ends with three nights on the Seto Inland Sea, or in the Kanazawa area if craft towns appeal more. For autumn 2026, the hotel and ryokan rooms in the ten-day version came to roughly ¥1.4 million to ¥2.2 million for the two of you on the dates we checked, before the private experiences.

This is the day-by-day plan, with the rooms we would ask for and the published rates and rules that matter. We checked every rate and condition on the property's own website on October 14, 2026, and the experience prices on the hosts' pages on October 13, 2026. The sources are listed at the end. If you are still deciding whether to plan a honeymoon yourselves or with a specialist, planning a Japan honeymoon with a specialist covers that question; this article is the itinerary itself.

Both versions move only three or four times. On a honeymoon the half-days lost to checking out, travelling and checking in are the ones you notice most, which is why the extra four days go to one more night in Tokyo and a slower ending, and not to more cities. The general case for building a fortnight this way is in a 14-day luxury Japan itinerary; below is how it works when the trip is for two.

DAYS 1 TO 3 IN TOKYO

Day 1 Arrival

Land at Haneda if you can. Hoshinoya Tokyo gives the taxi from Haneda as 20 minutes and from Narita as 60; Aman Tokyo gives 40 minutes from Haneda and 60 from Narita by car. Plan nothing after check-in except dinner close to the hotel. Hoshinoya Tokyo's check-in is 15:00.

Day 2 The city and the bay

Spend the morning in one neighbourhood on foot, have a long lunch, and keep the afternoon empty. In the evening, take a private boat on Tokyo Bay. The operator's plan for two charters the boat for the two of you; the smallest boats, Annie or Lily, cost ¥99,000 for 60 minutes, and the larger Mid Blue costs ¥275,000 for 90 minutes with a half bottle of Moët, or ¥308,000 on a Friday or Saturday, tax included. Sailings run between 11:00 and 22:00 and the route is decided with the crew on the day. Details are on our page for a private evening cruise on Tokyo Bay.

Day 3 One great counter

Keep the day for one dinner that matters, at a counter where you sit side by side. Hoshinoya Tokyo's own dinner course is ¥28,000 per person and its sushi counter Otemon ¥30,000, both before tax and a 10% service charge, and both need booking by 20:00 the day before; Otemon does not adjust its menu for allergies or dietary needs. How the city's harder tables are booked is in how Tokyo reservations actually work. If one of you would like a morning with a craftsman, a morning at a swordsmith's forge in Saitama is three hours at the forge, from ¥93,506 per person.

Where to stay in Tokyo

Hoshinoya Tokyo is a ryokan in a tower in Otemachi, beside Otemachi station and a ten-minute walk from Tokyo Station's Marunouchi North Exit. Each floor has only six rooms and its own tea lounge, and the hot spring bath on the 17th floor, indoor and open-air, is for guests only from 15:00 to 11:30 the next morning. For a couple, the Yuri room, about 45 m² with a king bed, is the one to ask for; Kiku, about 80 m² on the corner, is the larger choice. On the official calendar for two adults staying two nights, the lowest rate between October 14 and November 30, 2026 ran from ¥77,124 to ¥129,396 per person for the first night. Hoshinoya says it will not refuse the bath on account of tattoos alone, but may ask a guest to stop using it if other guests are uncomfortable.

Aman Tokyo is connected directly to Otemachi station, five minutes by car from Tokyo Station. The Garden View Suite is 71 m² on the 38th floor with the bathtub by the window; the Deluxe Suite, also 71 m², faces west for the evening light and the city from the bath. Aman does not publish rates on its site. Its terms add a 15% service charge to the room and 10% consumption tax to that total, and individual bookings carry a 100% charge from 15:00 two days before arrival. Spa treatments and the gym are for guests aged 16 and over, and the Japanese restaurant Musashi is closed on Sundays and Mondays.

Tokyo's accommodation tax is small for now: ¥200 per person per night on rooms of ¥15,000 or more. From April 1, 2027 it becomes 3% of the room charge.

DAYS 4 AND 5 IN A HAKONE RYOKAN

Day 4 The move to Hakone

Take the Romancecar from Shinjuku. Odakyu gives its fastest run to Hakone-Yumoto as 75 minutes with no change of train. Send the big suitcases ahead to Kyoto and travel with an overnight bag. Aim to arrive at check-in, 15:00 at most ryokan in this article, so that the first bath comes before dinner.

Day 5 A day with nothing in it

The second day is the reason for staying two nights. Breakfast in the room, a bath, a walk, and if you want one thing, a museum in the morning; our Hakone guide covers the two worth planning around and how to treat the Fuji view. Dinner is the same hour as the night before, so keep the afternoon slow.

Where to stay in Hakone

Kinnotake Sengokuhara suits a couple better than any other ryokan we checked for this article. Every room has its own open-air bath, seven of the nine room types are for one or two guests only, and the English site says guests must be 12 or older. Dinner is served in the room at 18:00 or 19:30. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 11:00, except in the two largest rooms, Mikado and Hime, where it is 14:00 and 11:30. For two people with dinner and breakfast, tax included, the lowest rates the official booking page showed were ¥99,000 in the Yoi room on a plan booked 60 days ahead that cannot be refunded, ¥118,800 for the same room on the 90-day early plan that can, and ¥183,150 for Mikado. On the standard plans, cancelling 7 to 4 days before costs 20%, 3 to 2 days 50%, the day before 80% and the day itself 100%. The nearest bus stop is three minutes away and the ryokan will arrange a hired car from Odawara or Hakone-Yumoto if you book it three days ahead.

Kinnotake Tonosawa, its sister in the gorge a few minutes from Hakone-Yumoto, takes no guests under 12 and gives every room a terrace and an open-air bath, in hinoki cypress in the three top-floor rooms. Dinner is in the dining room at 17:30 or 19:30. With seasonal kaiseki for two, rates ran from ¥112,200 in the Hoshi and Haruka rooms to ¥231,000 in Ten, the largest at 188 m².

Hakone Ginyu in Miyanoshita is a three-minute walk from the station and every room faces the Hayakawa valley from its own terrace and open-air bath. Couples who prefer a bed to futons should ask for Fuko, an 80 m² western-style room with a queen bed on the ground floor. Ginyu publishes its 2026 rates per person, including two meals, service, tax and the bathing tax: ¥54,600 to ¥66,700 per person for Fuko, depending on the season. It does not take bookings online, so it is one of the stays we arrange on your behalf.

Gora Kadan, the former imperial villa described in our Hakone guide, has no age limit, serves dinner in the room at 18:00 or 19:00, and asks guests arriving after 19:00 to call ahead. Its booking terms are the most generous here: free cancellation until eight days before. Its own FAQ says honeymooners are offered a small celebratory dish or drink at dinner and a commemorative photo in a frame.

Hakone's bathing tax is ¥150 per person per night. Ryokan nights are usually priced with dinner and breakfast, so a rate that looks high against a Tokyo hotel already includes the two meals. How the tiers of ryokan differ is in how to choose a ryokan, and bathing etiquette in the onsen guide.

DAYS 6 TO 9 IN KYOTO

Day 6 To Kyoto by Shinkansen

Leave Hakone after a late breakfast and take the Tokaido Shinkansen from Odawara. Not every Hikari stops at Odawara, so the train is chosen from the timetable when we arrange it. If you are staying at Hoshinoya Kyoto, the last boat leaves its landing in Arashiyama at 17:45, which sets the latest time you can leave Hakone.

Day 7 A morning workshop

Kyoto's best hours are early morning and late afternoon, so put the indoor things in the middle of the day. Two that suit a couple: mending a bowl with lacquer and gold at a kintsugi workshop, two hours from ¥33,000 per person and taken home the same day, or throwing a piece at a Kiyomizu pottery studio in Higashiyama, two and a half hours from ¥54,000 per person and shipped home in about four months.

Day 8 A garden after dark

This is the evening to book first. Murin-an, the Meiji-era villa garden near Nanzen-ji, offers a night private plan: the lit garden and its buildings are yours from closing time until 22:00. With a tea ceremony and English support, Murin-an's own fees come to ¥375,400 for two, tax included. Applications open 180 days before the date and close a month before, the fee is paid three weeks ahead, and from ten days before it cannot be refunded. The full conditions are on our page for a private evening at Murin-an.

Day 9 Your own day

Leave it empty, or book one quiet hour: an incense ceremony in a private garden in Nakagyo, two hours from ¥33,600 per person. It is a good day to walk without a plan and choose dinner that morning.

Day 10 Home

Fly home from Kansai. Aman Kyoto gives the drive to Kansai Airport as two hours, so a morning flight means leaving early; an afternoon departure lets you keep the last morning.

Where to stay in Kyoto

Hoshinoya Kyoto has 25 rooms on the Oi River in Arashiyama, and every one looks over the river and Mount Ogura. You arrive by the hotel's own boat, about 15 minutes up the Oi River from the hotel's landing in Arashiyama; boats are reserved in advance and run from 14:30 to 17:45, and when the river is too high the hotel drives each couple in by car instead. Tsukihashi, the hotel's special room with a tatami room and a separate bedroom, is the one for a honeymoon. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 12:00. Meals are not included: the kaiseki dinner starts at 17:30 at ¥24,200 per person, booked after the room, and the in-room dinners are served at 18:00 or 19:15 and must be ordered by 20:00 the day before. On the official calendar for two adults staying two nights in late October and November 2026, the lowest available rate ran from ¥95,984 to ¥130,443 per person for the first night, room only.

The Ritz-Carlton Kyoto sits on the Kamo River, a walk from Gion and Teramachi. Rooms average 50 m² and face the river, the Higashiyama hills or a garden; for a honeymoon the Kamogawa Suite, 126 m² over the river, is the room to ask about. The hotel states that Kyoto's accommodation tax is included in its room rate, that check-in is at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00, and that the person checking in must be 18 or older. It does not publish rates on its site.

Aman Kyoto is set in a forest garden in Takagamine, 30 minutes by car from Kyoto Station, with Kinkaku-ji within walking distance. Rooms start at 60 m²; the Takagamine Suite adds a tatami room to the bedroom, and staying gives you the hot spring at the Aman Spa. The restaurant Taka-An takes last orders at 20:00, early by Kyoto standards. If you want to walk out of the hotel into the city at night, the Ritz-Carlton or a split stay suits better. Aman does not publish its rates.

You can also split the four nights: two by the river in Arashiyama and two in the centre. It is one extra move inside the same city, and it puts you within walking distance of Gion for the second half.

Kyoto's accommodation tax changed on March 1, 2026. Per person per night, measured on the room charge before meals and consumption tax, it is ¥1,000 from ¥20,000, ¥4,000 from ¥50,000 and ¥10,000 from ¥100,000. For two people over four nights in a room at ¥100,000 per person, that is ¥80,000 in tax, so ask whether a quoted rate includes it.

THE 14 DAY VERSION

The fourteen-day plan adds a fourth night in Tokyo, which is the easiest place to recover from the flight, and then three nights after Kyoto in a place quieter than Kyoto. Hakone moves to days 5 and 6 and Kyoto to days 7 to 10. Day 4 can stay empty, or hold the forge in Saitama if you did not fit it in earlier. For the ending there are three good shapes.

Days 11 to 13 A ship and an island inn

guntû is a small floating ryokan that sails the Seto Inland Sea from Bella Vista Marina near Onomichi. It has 17 cabins, every one with a terrace, and every voyage is two or three nights. For a couple, ask for the Terrace Suite with Open-Air Bath, about 50 m², where the bed is the one closest to the window, or the Grand Suite, about 80 m², which has the largest terrace. Check-in on the example voyage is 13:30 and the ship leaves at 15:00; you are back at the marina around 11:00 on the last day. On the westward two-night voyage leaving on December 8 or 21, 2026, the Terrace Suite with Open-Air Bath costs ¥725,000 per person with two in the cabin, tax included, covering meals on board, most drinks and the activities ashore. Guests must be 15 or older. Cancellation is free until 21 days before; the charge then rises in steps to 50% on the day of departure, and 100% if you do not board.

After two nights at sea, spend the last night at Azumi Setoda on Ikuchijima, 40 minutes by fast boat from Onomichi port. Every room has a hinoki bath; the Sora Suzumi and Niwa Suzumi rooms are 70 m² over two floors, with a tatami room and daybed upstairs. The restaurant is closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, which matters when the ship lands on one of those days. The islands as a route are in our sample itinerary Shikoku and the Inland Sea.

Or three nights on Naoshima

If art is the point, stay at Benesse House on Naoshima, reached by train from Okayama to Uno, about 50 minutes, and a ferry of about 20 minutes that takes no reservations. Guests in the Oval building, at the top of the hill, ride a monorail that only they can use; its suite is 70 m². Hotel guests can stay in the museum until 23:00. The Chichu Art Museum needs a timed ticket, ¥2,500 bought online (¥2,700 on weekends and holidays), and closes on Mondays, so do not plan the island around a Monday. Children aged 5 and under are not accepted in the Museum and Oval buildings. Benesse House does not show rates on its site; more on the islands is in the Seto Inland Sea art islands.

Or a ryokan near Kanazawa

For a last ryokan in place of the sea, Beniya Mukayu in Yamashiro Onsen gives every room its own open-air hot spring bath; the Zen Junior Suite, 70 m², adds a jacuzzi. From Kyoto it is about two and a half hours to Kaga Onsen station, changing to the Hokuriku Shinkansen at Tsuruga, and the ryokan's free shuttle from the station must be booked. Children under 7 are not accepted, and the cancellation charge starts at 20% three weeks out and reaches 100% from three days before. Kanazawa itself is covered in our Kanazawa guide and the route along the coast in The Hokuriku Coast.

Day 14 Home

guntû offers a car to JR Fukuyama station or Hiroshima Airport on the day you disembark, which helps if you finish the trip directly from the ship.

Adding the rooms for the ten-day version at the rates we saw, three nights at Hoshinoya Tokyo, two at Kinnotake Sengokuhara and four at Hoshinoya Kyoto came to roughly ¥1.4 million to ¥2.2 million for two in October and November 2026, if every night cost what the first night did, before accommodation tax, Kyoto dinners and the experiences. The two private evenings add ¥474,400 to ¥683,400. Spring and late autumn are the dearest weeks; how to shape a budget around those seasons is in what a luxury trip to Japan costs.

STAYGO's planning fee is separate from all of this. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for the two of you, for a trip of 7 to 14 days, so both versions of this itinerary fall inside it. We arrange everything in your names, and you pay the hotels, ryokan, restaurants and hosts directly at their own rates, with no commission or markup from us.

THE CONDITIONS FOREIGN COUPLES MISS

Cheapest rate, strictest terms. Kinnotake's 60-day plan is the lowest price at the ryokan and cannot be refunded from the moment it is booked. Aman Tokyo charges in full from 15:00 two days before. If your dates could still move, pay for the flexible rate.

Tax and service on top. Aman Tokyo adds 15% service and 10% tax to the room. Hoshinoya Tokyo's restaurants add tax and a 10% service charge. Kyoto's accommodation tax can reach ¥10,000 per person per night. Ginyu and Kinnotake quote totals including tax; a Tokyo hotel's headline rate often does not.

Dinner is at a fixed hour. Ryokan serve dinner at set times, 18:00 or 19:30 at Kinnotake Sengokuhara, 18:00 or 19:00 at Gora Kadan, and a late train means a late or missed dinner. At Hoshinoya Kyoto, dinner is not part of the room and needs its own booking.

Age rules. Kinnotake Tonosawa takes no guests under 12, Kinnotake Sengokuhara states 12 and over on its English site, and the spa at Aman Tokyo is for 16 and over. For a honeymoon this is usually welcome: these are quiet buildings.

Shared baths are separated by sex. At most ryokan the shared baths are for men and women separately, so the bath you share is the one in your room. That is why every Hakone room in this plan has its own.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read each property's and host's own website, and their official booking calendars where they publish one, on October 14, 2026 (the experience pages on October 13, 2026). We did not contact the properties. Rates are the lowest shown for two adults on the dates noted and change daily. We did not use figures from booking sites or press coverage.

QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK

Is ten days enough for a Japan honeymoon?

Yes, with three bases: Tokyo for three nights, a Hakone ryokan for two and Kyoto for four. Fourteen days adds one night in Tokyo and three on the Seto Inland Sea or near Kanazawa, without adding more moves inside the main route.

Which Hakone ryokan has a private open-air bath in every room?

Among the ryokan we checked, Kinnotake Sengokuhara, Kinnotake Tonosawa and Hakone Ginyu give every room its own open-air bath. Kinnotake Sengokuhara and Tonosawa also take only guests aged 12 and over.

How much does a luxury honeymoon in Japan cost for two?

For the ten-day version in October and November 2026, the rooms alone came to roughly ¥1.4 million to ¥2.2 million for two at the published rates we saw, before accommodation tax, dinners and private experiences. STAYGO's Signature planning fee is USD 3,500 for the two of you.

Do we need to book dinner separately at a ryokan?

At most ryokan, dinner and breakfast are included and served at a set time. Some hotels in the ryokan style, such as Hoshinoya Kyoto, price the room without meals, and dinner is booked separately after the room.

HAVE THIS ITINERARY DESIGNED FOR THE TWO OF YOU
