A Hokkaido honeymoon works in two seasons. In July and August, Sapporo averages 21.1°C and 22.3°C, about 4.6°C cooler than Tokyo, and Farm Tomita's lavender is at its best in early to mid July. In February, Sapporo averages minus 2.7°C, the 2027 Snow Festival runs February 4 to 11, and drift ice is likeliest off Abashiri between mid-February and early March. Either way, give the island four or five nights in two ryokan with a hot spring bath in the room: each of the 15 villas at Zaborin in Niseko has one indoors and one open-air, and Bourou Noguchi in Noboribetsu starts at ¥87,500 (about US$550) for two on a February night with dinner and breakfast. With a flight of about 1 hour 30 minutes out of Haneda and one of about 2 hours on to Osaka Itami, Hokkaido fits between Tokyo and Kyoto on a trip of 12 to 14 days.

Below are both seasons, five ryokan for two with their rooms, rules and published rates, the flights and trains, and the accommodation taxes Hokkaido introduced on April 1, 2026. We checked each fact on the official sites of the weather agency, operators, ryokan, airline, railway and local governments on October 18, 2026; the sources are listed at the end. For the whole country month by month, see the best time for a honeymoon in Japan.

When we looked, Kuramure was the only one of the five ryokan below with its July 2027 dates open.

SUMMER IN HOKKAIDO

The Japan Meteorological Agency declares no rainy season for Hokkaido: the front that brings early summer rain to Honshu usually fades near the island. Sapporo's July and August highs average 25.4°C and 26.4°C, against 29.9°C and 31.3°C in Tokyo. The Pacific coast is cooler and foggier: Kushiro averages 18.2°C in August and has fog on about 16 days in July.

Furano and Biei

Farm Tomita in Nakafurano says its Traditional Lavender Field blooms between late June and late July and is at its best in early to mid July, with the Tokachi mountains behind. It is 45 minutes by car from Asahikawa Airport. The Shirogane Blue Pond is about 20 minutes by car from Biei Station, and Biei's tourism association suggests the morning, since it is busiest between 13:00 and 15:00 on sunny days; the colour can cloud after heavy rain. By train, Sapporo to Asahikawa takes as little as 1 hour 25 minutes. In 2026 the Furano Lavender Express ran on set summer days, Sapporo 7:41 to Furano 9:44 without a change, and the Furano-Biei Norokko sightseeing train made its last run on September 23.

Lake Toya

Fireworks are launched over Lake Toya from the lakeside at Toyako Onsen every night of the season. In 2026 that was every night between April 28 and October 31, for 20 minutes from 20:45, in rain as well, though unsteady wind can stop them; the 2027 dates are not yet published. Toya is under two hours from Sapporo on the Hokuto limited express.

Shiretoko and Tomamu

The Shiretoko Five Lakes open with the road, usually mid-April to mid-November. The raised boardwalk to the first lake is free all season; between May 10 and July 31, while the bears are most active, the ground paths to all five can only be walked with a registered guide, three hours from ¥6,000 (about US$40) per adult. From Utoro, the Aurora's four-hour cruise to Cape Shiretoko ran in Golden Week and June 1 to October 15 in 2026, at ¥10,000 (about US$60). At Tomamu, a dawn gondola climbs to the Unkai Terrace, at 1,088 m, for the sea of cloud that forms when the weather lines up; its 2027 season is planned for May 13 to October 17.

WINTER IN HOKKAIDO

Winter is dry snow and real cold. Sapporo averages minus 3.2°C in January and minus 2.7°C in February, with 95 cm of snow on the ground in an average February. At Kutchan, where Zaborin stands, 921 cm falls in an average winter and the cover reaches 181 cm.

Sapporo Snow Festival

The 77th Sapporo Snow Festival runs February 4 to 11, 2027, at Odori Park, where five large snow sculptures stand between West 1 and West 11, at Susukino and at Tsudome.

Niseko

All four of Niseko United's ski areas open on November 28, 2026; Niseko Village closes on April 4, Hanazono on April 11, and Grand Hirafu and Annupuri on May 5, 2027. Niseko United says the dates can change. For a hotel, Higashiyama Niseko Village, a Ritz-Carlton Reserve, has 50 rooms and suites and a shared onsen, and the guest checking in must be 18 or over; three nights for two from February 17, 2027 averaged from ¥284,241 (about US$1,800) a night, taxes and fees included.

Drift ice and cranes

The icebreaker Aurora sails from Abashiri between January 20 and March 31; the large boat's hour at sea is ¥7,000 (about US$40) per adult, tax included. The operator gives mid-February to early March as the likeliest weeks, notes that the ice now arrives later and covers less, and cruises to Cape Notoro when there is none within reach. In Rausu, Shiretoko Nature Cruise plans its 2027 winter season for January 23 to March 14, and its one-hour drift ice and bird watching cruise from January 30, at ¥5,000 (about US$30) per adult; it counts about 700 white-tailed and Steller's sea eagles arriving with the ice. The Shiretoko Pass road is closed in winter.

The Wild Bird Society of Japan's Tsurui-Ito Tancho Sanctuary is about 50 minutes by car from Kushiro Airport. Red-crowned cranes come close between late November and mid-March, while the society feeds them, and more than 300 can gather at the peak; its nature centre is free and closed on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. At Tomamu, the ice village is planned for December 20, 2026 to March 10, 2027, open in the evenings and free to the resort's hotel guests on most plans.

Zaborin is in Hanazono, in Kutchan, seven minutes by car from the Hanazono ski area, with a free shuttle there in the ski season. Each of its 15 villas has two baths of its own, indoor and covered open-air, fed by free-flowing water from its own spring, and a Japanese room with futons or a Western one with beds. Two nights in a 70 m² room on February 17 to 19, 2027 came to ¥828,000 (about US$5,240), with the kaiseki dinners, service and taxes. It closes for maintenance November 4 to 16, 2026.

Otaru Retreat Kuramure, at Asarigawa Onsen, has 19 rooms, each with its own hot spring bath, semi-open-air in five of its six room types; the semi-open-air suite is 72 m². Dinner is a Japanese course in a private dining room at 18:00 or 19:00, drinks are included, and the standard plan is free to cancel until eight days before. Its rates include tax and service.

Shikotsu Tsuruga Bessou Ao no Za, 40 minutes from New Chitose, suits a first or last night. All 25 villas face Lake Shikotsu, each with an open-air hot spring bath, which the inn filters, recirculates and chlorinates, and an indoor jet bath. Kaiseki is served in private rooms with drinks included. The standard rate on February 17, 2027 was ¥220,000 (about US$1,390), tax included; the early plan had to be booked by November 20, 2026.

Bourou Noguchi Noboribetsu takes no guests aged 12 or under; every room is a suite with a free-flowing hot spring bath by the window, and meals are in private dining rooms. Its bus takes an hour from New Chitose, booked seven days ahead, and Noboribetsu is 1 hour 10 minutes from Sapporo by limited express. On the same plan and date, the 100 m² executive suite was ¥111,700 (about US$710). Most of the town's springs rise from Jigokudani, a valley formed by volcanic activity about 10,000 years ago.

Akan Tsuruga Bessou Hinanoza, about an hour by car from Memanbetsu and Kushiro airports, is the base for the eastern route. All 25 rooms are suites with an open-air hot spring bath, the Ten-no-za suites, from 110 m², facing the lake, and guests must be of junior high school age or over. The inn changes the water in the room baths daily and uses no chlorine. Meals are in private rooms, with drinks at dinner and in the bar included; the early plan had to be booked by December 20, 2026.

GETTING THERE AND AROUND

From Tokyo, fly. On ANA's winter timetable Haneda to New Chitose takes 1 hour 30 to 1 hour 40 minutes, and the airport lists 55 flights from Haneda on Wednesday, November 11, 2026. Haneda also flies to Asahikawa, for Furano and Biei, and to Kushiro in 1 hour 35 minutes, and to Memanbetsu, for Abashiri and Shiretoko, in 1 hour 40 to 1 hour 45 minutes. The Rapid Airport train reaches Sapporo in as little as 33 minutes. By car from New Chitose, Lake Shikotsu is about 40 minutes, Kuramure about 75 and Zaborin about two hours.

In winter we keep long drives to daylight and to drivers who know the roads. Hokkaido's Regional Development Bureau warns that bad weather can leave a car stranded and maps the stretches prone to whiteouts, and Zaborin notes that some roads close in winter.

TAXES ON A HOKKAIDO NIGHT

Hokkaido began charging an accommodation tax on April 1, 2026: per person per night, ¥100 on a room charge under ¥20,000, ¥200 from ¥20,000 and ¥500 from ¥50,000. The room charge is the room-only rate with service, before meals and consumption tax, and there is no exemption by age. Eighteen cities and towns add their own tax, and hot spring towns a bathing tax.

FITTING HOKKAIDO INTO A JAPAN HONEYMOON

Hokkaido adds two flights and two bases. With ten days, choose between Hokkaido and Kyoto, as our guide to trip lengths explains. With twelve to fourteen, fly Haneda to New Chitose and New Chitose to Osaka Itami, and the trip runs in one direction to Kyoto.

Three honeymoon lengths with Hokkaido in them

10 days, 9 nightsTokyo, 3 nights; Hokkaido, 5 nights in two places; Tokyo, 1 nightHaneda and New Chitose, both ways
12 days, 11 nightsTokyo, 3 nights; Hokkaido, 4 nights in two places; Kyoto, 4 nightsHaneda to New Chitose; New Chitose to Itami, about 2 hours
14 days, 13 nightsTokyo, 3 nights; Hokkaido, 5 nights in two places; Kyoto, 5 nightsAs for 12 days, or Kansai, 2 hours 20 to 2 hours 30 minutes

We plan two nights or more in each place, since the first afternoon goes to arriving and ryokan dinners are at fixed hours. In summer, pair Lake Shikotsu or Noboribetsu with Otaru or Niseko, with a long day for Furano and Biei from Asahikawa Airport. In winter, pair Niseko with Otaru for the festival, or go east: Memanbetsu for the ice, Lake Akan, and home from Kushiro after the cranes. The Tokyo and Kyoto days are in the luxury Japan honeymoon itinerary.
