For an Okinawa honeymoon, choose one group of islands and give it three or four nights. The main island has the large beach resorts, on its west coast about an hour or a little more by car from Naha Airport: Halekulani Okinawa, whose five clifftop villas each have a heated private pool and a natural hot spring bath, and Hoshinoya Okinawa, where all 100 rooms are on the ground floor facing the sea. Miyako, about three hours from Haneda, has Rosewood Miyakojima, where every one of the 55 villas has its own pool. In the Yaeyama islands, ten minutes by boat from Ishigaki, Hoshinoya Taketomi Island has 48 villas on Taketomi, whose village is a protected historic district. On the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 averages, the rainy season in Okinawa runs about May 10 to June 21, and the region sees 7.7 typhoon approaches a year, 2.2 of them in August.
This article sets out the three groups of islands, the rooms we would ask about for two, the months that suit the sea, the flights and boats that join the islands to Tokyo and Kyoto, and the taxes that change in 2027. We checked every room, rate, timetable and rule on the official websites of the hotels, the boat operators, the airports, the Japan Meteorological Agency, Okinawa Prefecture and the island towns on October 18, 2026. The sources are listed at the end. For the route through Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto before the islands, see the luxury Japan honeymoon itinerary.
Key points
- Haneda to Naha takes 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 45 minutes, with 36 flights a day in October 2026, and the west coast resorts are 60 to 75 minutes on by car. Miyako is about three hours from Haneda, and Ishigaki 3 hours 20 to 3 hours 30 minutes in the winter timetable.
- Rooms with a private pool: the five clifftop villas at Halekulani Okinawa, every villa at Rosewood Miyakojima, the four Tida villas at Hoshinoya Okinawa, the Club Villas at The Busena Terrace and the Royal Villa at Risonare Kohamajima.
- Hoshinoya Okinawa and Hoshinoya Taketomi Island take bookings of two nights or more. Single nights open 30 and 60 days before.
- The rainy season averages about May 10 to June 21. Typhoon approaches peak in August, at 2.2, and September, at 1.9, and the prefecture's habu jellyfish warning covered June 1 to September 30 in 2026.
- On February 1, 2027 Okinawa Prefecture starts an accommodation tax of 2% of the room-only rate per person per night, up to ¥2,000. Taketomi Town has passed a visitor tax of ¥1,000 a visit, which it was not yet collecting on October 18, 2026.
THE ISLANDS AT A GLANCE
The three groups below are different trips. Each move between them is another flight, so a honeymoon of three or four nights works best in one of them.
| Islands | From Haneda | What they suit | Where we would stay |
|---|---|---|---|
| The main island, west coast | Naha, 2 hours 30 to 2 hours 45 minutes, then 60 to 75 minutes by car | The widest choice of resorts, a day on the Kerama islands, Shuri Castle | Halekulani Okinawa, Hoshinoya Okinawa, The Busena Terrace |
| Miyako | Miyako, about 3 hours, three flights a day; or 50 to 55 minutes from Naha | A villa with its own pool beside the sea | Rosewood Miyakojima |
| The Yaeyama islands: Ishigaki, Taketomi, Kohama, Iriomote | Ishigaki, 3 hours 20 to 3 hours 30 minutes in winter, then 10 to 55 minutes by boat | An island village, short boat crossings, the forests of Iriomote | Hoshinoya Taketomi Island, Risonare Kohamajima, ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort |
THE MAIN ISLAND
The resorts we would look at first are on the west coast between Yomitan and Nago. All three below publish their rooms and rates on their own booking pages, and each puts Naha Airport 60 to 75 minutes away by expressway.
Halekulani Okinawa
Halekulani Okinawa in Onna faces about a mile of coast inside the Okinawa Kaigan Quasi-National Park, with 360 rooms, the standard ones 50 m² with a terrace. For a honeymoon, ask about the five villas along the clifftop, each with its own heated pool and a natural hot spring bath: the one-bedroom Cliff Villa is 83 m² and the two-bedroom Halekulani Cliff Villa 165 m². The one-bedroom villa showed no availability on any of the dates we tried in November 2026 and May 2027. For two adults on Thursday, November 19, 2026, the two-bedroom villa was ¥543,064 (about US$3,440) with breakfast, and a 50 m² Premier Ocean Front room with a king bed ¥98,670 (about US$620) for the room alone, both with tax and service included; on Wednesday, May 19, 2027 that room was ¥74,192 (about US$470).
Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 12:00, and the hotel's own Alphard with a driver from the airport costs ¥40,000 one way. In winter the outdoor pools and the beach close: the Ocean Terrace Pool from November 1, the rest from December 1, the Orchid Pool until February 28 and the beach and the Quiet Pool, kept for guests aged 16 and over, until March 31. The indoor pool stays open.
Hoshinoya Okinawa
Hoshinoya Okinawa in Yomitan has 100 rooms, all on the ground floor along a kilometre of natural coast. Fushi, 93 to 94 m², and Haru, 88 to 94 m², are the rooms for two; the four Tida villas, 256 to 258 m², each have a 20 m private pool and a terrace that steps onto the beach. The hotel's pool is open 24 hours all year, and the swimming beach, Nirai Beach, is a ten-minute walk away. Bookings are for two nights or more, and single nights open 30 days before. For two adults arriving on November 19, 2026, the booking page showed two nights in Fushi at ¥205,746 (about US$1,300) for the room on a winter plan that cannot be changed or refunded, or ¥316,536 (about US$2,000) on the flexible room-only rate, and two nights in Tida from ¥1,006,236 (about US$6,370).
Meals are not part of the room. Dinner in the dining room starts at 17:00 at ¥24,200 per person with tax and a 10% service charge, and the kitchen can send the evening's dishes to your room instead. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 12:00, and the hotel says it does not accept tips.
The Busena Terrace
The Busena Terrace on the Busena peninsula in Nago has 390 rooms and 18 villas. In its Club Villas, the Luxurious Suite is 66 m² with a private pool of 2 by 4 m and takes no children under 13. For two adults on November 19, 2026 it was ¥180,000 (about US$1,140) a night with breakfast, taxes and fees included, free to cancel until 21 days before. Check-in is 14:00 and check-out 11:00, and the hotel's car from the airport costs ¥24,000. It also charters its 45-foot yacht to staying guests: an hour at sea for up to seven people, drinks included, is ¥132,000 (about US$840) with tax, charged in full if cancelled after 20:00 the day before.
A day on the Kerama islands
The Kerama islands west of Naha have been a national park since March 5, 2014, and two village boats cross from Naha's Tomari port. To Tokashiki the fast boat takes 40 minutes and the ferry 70; to Zamami the fast boat takes 50 minutes and the ferry about two hours, calling at Aka. Both fast boats stop for maintenance in autumn 2026, Zamami's between October 20 and December 3 and Tokashiki's between November 16 and 30, which leaves the ferries, once a day each way on most weekdays. Adult fares one way are ¥3,300 by fast boat and ¥2,200 by ferry to Tokashiki, and ¥3,950 and ¥2,900 to Zamami, where each passenger also pays the village's ¥100 entry tax.
Shuri Castle
Shuri Castle in Naha opens its rebuilt main hall, the Seiden, to the public at noon on November 23, 2026, after the park closes on November 22 for the completion ceremony. From that day the paid area costs ¥1,000 per adult, and the inside of the main hall is shown in timed slots of 30 minutes, released at 13:00 on the 1st of the month two months before the visit. We build that day around the slot.
MIYAKO
Rosewood Miyakojima, in the Hirara area of Miyakojima City, has 55 villas, three of them houses, and every one has an ocean view and its own pool. The Oceanview and Beachfront Villas take two guests, with 60 m² inside and 70 m² outside, the Beachfront ones opening straight onto the beach; the Deluxe Oceanview Villa adds a separate bedroom and living room, with 90 m² inside and 80 m² outside. Breakfast is included. The resort adds a 15% service charge and 10% consumption tax to the room rate, and charges the whole stay for a cancellation less than eight days before arrival. Check-in is from 15:00 and check-out at noon. We could not read its rates on the official site, so we ask for them with your dates.
On the timetable shown on October 18, 2026, Haneda had three flights a day to Miyako Airport, of 2 hours 55 minutes to 3 hours, Kansai two, of 2 hours 25 minutes, and Naha thirteen, of 50 to 55 minutes. A second airport on neighbouring Shimoji has Skymark flights from Haneda, Kobe and Naha, and in the winter timetable flights from Seoul, Busan, Taipei and Taichung.
ISHIGAKI AND THE YAEYAMA ISLANDS
The Yaeyama islands are reached through Ishigaki. Haneda has four flights a day there in the winter timetable that starts on October 25, of 3 hours 20 to 3 hours 30 minutes, and Kansai three in November, of about 2 hours 45 minutes. The island ferry terminal in Ishigaki town is 30 to 45 minutes from the airport. Two companies, Yaeyama Kanko Ferry and Anei Kanko, sail to the islands: Taketomi in 10 to 15 minutes, Kohama in 25 to 30 and the two ports of Iriomote in 40 to 55. Between them their timetables list 18 departures a day to Taketomi, the first at 7:30 and the last at 17:30, at ¥970 per adult each way, and Anei Kanko asks passengers to allow at least 30 minutes for any change of boat.
Hoshinoya Taketomi Island
Hoshinoya Taketomi Island has 48 villas with low coral-stone walls and gardens of white coral sand, built to the island's own design rules. For two, ask for Gajoni, 59 m² with a king bed, a living room and a bath that looks onto your own garden. No room has a private pool; the hotel has one pool. Its bus meets each ferry at Taketomi port, ten minutes away, and the hotel suggests boarding by 17:00, since the last boats are often cancelled for wind and waves. Bookings are for two nights or more, and single nights open 60 days before. For two adults arriving on November 19, 2026, the lowest rate for a two-night stay was ¥47,369 (about US$300) per person for the first night, and Gajoni for one night on the standard room-only rate ¥146,652 (about US$930) for the two of you.
Meals are booked separately. Dinner, the islands' produce cooked in the French manner, starts at 17:15 at ¥18,150 per person with tax and service; it is booked by 17:00 the day before, and the course is not adjusted for allergies or dislikes. Two things suit a honeymoon: a traditional sabani sailing boat for the two of you between 9:00 and 11:00, guided in Japanese, at ¥15,180 per person, and an anniversary arrangement for one couple a day, a gift in the room and an album of photographs taken by the staff, at ¥14,520, requested 14 days ahead. Check-in is 15:00 to 18:00 and check-out 12:00.
The village on Taketomi
Taketomi's village was chosen as an Important Preservation District for Groups of Traditional Buildings on April 28, 1987: white sand lanes, walls of piled coral stone and red-tiled houses in their own gardens. The islanders wrote a charter for it in 1986, and the visitor rules that follow from it are short. Do not step inside the stone walls around a house, do not walk through the village in swimwear, leave the flowers, shells and fish where they are, and do not enter the sacred groves called on. Hoshinoya runs village walks by water buffalo cart at 8:30 on Sundays, Tuesdays and Fridays and at 17:50 on Mondays, ¥4,200 per person, the evening one timed for when, as the hotel puts it, the people thin out and the island goes quiet.
Risonare Kohamajima
Risonare Kohamajima on Kohama, 25 minutes by boat from Ishigaki and 10 minutes by the hotel's shuttle from the port, has 60 suites and villas. Kohama has no taxis or buses, so the shuttle meets each ferry. The Royal Villa, 95 m², has its own pool: for two adults on Tuesday, November 17, 2026 it was ¥91,800 (about US$580) for the room alone on the flexible rate, or ¥110,000 (about US$700) with dinner and breakfast. Between October 1 and November 30 the hotel serves dinner for one couple a day at a table on high ground, 17:30 to 20:30, at ¥30,000 per person, booked seven days ahead, and between December and February the beach pool becomes a heated infinity pool. Check-in is 15:00 and check-out 11:00.
ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort
On Ishigaki itself, ANA InterContinental Ishigaki Resort is about 20 minutes by taxi from the airport and 10 minutes from the ferry terminal, which makes it the easiest base for day trips by boat. Its Club InterContinental rooms, 43.2 m², include the lounge with breakfast, afternoon tea and evening cocktails. Only 12 rooms in the Bay Wing and 8 in the Club have a king bed, and a resort fee of ¥1,000 per person per stay applies from age 13. We could not read its rates on the official booking page.
Iriomote
Iriomote was inscribed as part of a World Natural Heritage site in July 2021. Since March 1, 2025, five areas of its forest and rivers, including the Hinai River route to Pinaisara Falls, need the town's approval in advance, and at the falls a registered guide must go with you; the Hinai River takes up to 200 people a day. Only guides licensed by Taketomi Town may lead visitors in the island's forests and rivers, so a morning there is planned around a guide's day.
WHEN TO GO
Okinawa is warm all year. On the Japan Meteorological Agency's 1991 to 2020 averages, Naha's monthly mean runs between 17.3°C in January and 29.1°C in July. Ishigaki, further south, is 1.6°C warmer than Naha in January and within half a degree of it between July and October. The choice of month comes down to rain, sunshine and typhoons.

The rainy season comes earlier here than in Tokyo or Kyoto. Its average dates in Okinawa are about May 10 to June 21; in 2026 it ran about May 4 to June 29, and in 2025 about May 5 to June 7. June is Naha's wettest month, at 284.4 mm. July is the sunniest month in all three places, with 227.0 hours of sunshine in Naha, 241.0 in Miyako and 261.0 in Ishigaki.
The agency counts a typhoon as approaching when its centre comes within 300 km of a weather station in the region. The Okinawa region averages 7.7 approaches a year, the most of any region in Japan, and 2.2 of them in August. The sea has a season of its own too: Okinawa Prefecture issues a habu jellyfish warning each year for June to September, when stings are most frequent.
For a honeymoon spent mostly by the sea, we would choose late June and July, after the rainy season and before the typhoon peak, or October and November, when approaches fall to 1.1 and then 0.3 and Naha has its fewest rainy days, 8.8 and 8.2. In November 2026 the fast boats to the Kerama islands are out of service for part of the month, so a day there means the slower ferry. Winter is mild, 17 to 19°C in January, but it is the least sunny time of year, and at Halekulani Okinawa the beach and most outdoor pools are closed. The rest of the country, month by month, is in the best time for a honeymoon in Japan.
FITTING OKINAWA INTO A JAPAN HONEYMOON
We put the islands at the end. In the 14-day shape on our honeymoon page, Okinawa takes the last four nights, after three in Tokyo, two in a Hakone ryokan and four in Kyoto. Three nights give you two whole days by the sea; four leave a spare day if the weather turns. We would stay with one group of islands, since on a short stay a day lost to the wind is a large share of it.
From Kyoto, Itami had six flights a day to Naha in October 2026, of 2 hours 5 to 2 hours 10 minutes, and Kansai had nine. In November Kansai also has three flights a day to Ishigaki and two to Miyako. Naha connects to Ishigaki in about an hour and to Miyako in under an hour, and you can leave Japan from the islands: in October 2026 flights left Naha for Taipei, Seoul, Hong Kong, Shanghai, Bangkok and, four days a week, Singapore.
Luggage takes longer to reach the islands than to reach Kyoto. For a case handed to Yamato Transport in central Kyoto on Monday, November 16, 2026, its delivery search gave Wednesday the 18th for Naha and Onna, Thursday the 19th for Miyako and Ishigaki, and Saturday the 21st for Taketomi, where no time slot can be chosen. For three or four nights we would take the cases on the plane.
On the main island a car matters more than on the smaller islands. We arrange a car with a driver for the airport transfers and the days out, and you pay the car company directly; how those fares work is in what a private driver costs in Japan. To drive yourselves, Japan accepts an International Driving Permit issued under the Geneva Convention, for up to a year from the day you land.
TAXES AND SMALL RULES
A new accommodation tax. Okinawa Prefecture starts an accommodation tax on February 1, 2027: 2% of the room-only charge per person per night, up to ¥2,000. Miyakojima and Ishigaki start their own on the same day inside the same 2%, at 1.2% for the city and 0.8% for the prefecture, and Onna, Nago, Motobu and Chatan on the main island plan to do the same. For two people in a room at ¥150,000 a night before meals, that is ¥1,500 each, or ¥3,000 a night. Halekulani Okinawa says the tax applies to every night from February 1, whenever the room was booked.
A visitor tax in Taketomi Town. The town that covers Taketomi, Kohama, Iriomote and the smaller islands around them has passed a tax of ¥1,000 per person for each visit. On October 18, 2026 it was not yet being collected, and the town was still procuring the system to collect it.
Typhoon terms. Hoshino Resorts, which runs Hoshinoya Okinawa, Hoshinoya Taketomi Island and Risonare Kohamajima, waives its cancellation charge when a typhoon cancels your flight or the ferry does not sail, for stays booked on its own site with check-out between May 31 and December 1, 2026. Halekulani Okinawa lets you cancel free when the airline waives its own charge for a typhoon, and ANA InterContinental Ishigaki charges nothing when cancelled flights or boats keep you from reaching the hotel.
Tattoos at the pools. Halekulani Okinawa admits guests with tattoos to its Quiet Pool and Ocean Terrace Pool, and asks for larger tattoos to be covered at the others; The Busena Terrace asks for them to be covered at its pools and does not admit them to its spa and sauna. A villa with its own pool avoids the question.
WHERE STAYGO COMES IN
STAYGO plans private trips across Japan from Tokyo. For an Okinawa ending we choose the islands and the room with you, fit the flights and boats around check-in times, arrange a car with a driver where it helps, and keep a free day before the flight home in the typhoon months. We arrange everything in your names, and you pay the hotels, restaurants and hosts directly at their own rates, with no commission or markup from us. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for the two of you, for a trip of 7 to 14 days; longer or more complex trips are quoted as Bespoke.
SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED
We read each hotel's own website and official booking page, the timetables of the airports and boat operators, the Japan Meteorological Agency's averages, and the pages of Okinawa Prefecture, the island towns and the Ministry of the Environment on October 18, 2026. Rates are the lowest shown for two adults on the dates named and change daily. We did not contact the hotels or operators, and we did not use figures from booking sites, guidebooks or press coverage. Prices and conditions are those shown on October 18, 2026, and can change. Dollar amounts are a guide only, at ¥158 to US$1 (October 2026); every hotel, ryokan and restaurant charges in yen.

QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK
Which Okinawa island is best for a honeymoon?
For the widest choice of beach resorts, the west coast of the main island, 60 to 75 minutes by car from Naha Airport. For a villa with its own pool, Miyako, where every one of Rosewood Miyakojima's 55 villas has one. For an island village and short boat crossings, Taketomi or Kohama in the Yaeyama islands, 10 to 30 minutes by boat from Ishigaki.
When is the best time for an Okinawa honeymoon?
