Seven luxury hotel spas in Tokyo and Kyoto say on their own websites that two people can be treated together. In Tokyo they are Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi, Janu Tokyo, Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo and The Peninsula Tokyo. In Kyoto they are Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto and HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO. Most also take guests who are not staying. Prices range from ¥13,000, the fee to reserve The Peninsula's room for two, up to ¥333,000 for a four-hour Spa House day at Janu.

This guide covers each room for two, who can book it, sample prices and times, and the bath, pool and tattoo rules. We read every fact below on the hotel's own website, or in the spa menu linked from it, on October 15, 2026. Where a hotel does not state something, we say so. If you are also thinking about a ryokan with its own bath, our guide to Kyoto ryokan with private onsen covers that side of the trip.

Key points

WHICH HOTEL SPAS HAVE A ROOM FOR TWO

We included only spas whose own pages or menus name a couples' suite, a room for two or treatments for two. Many spa pages show two beds side by side in a photograph but never say so in words.

What a couples' room means differs from one spa to the next. At Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi and Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo it is a suite inside the spa where you are treated side by side. At The Peninsula Tokyo it is a treatment room for two, reserved for a separate fee. At Janu Tokyo it is a whole Spa House with its own sauna or hammam, hot bath and cold plunge pool. At HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO it is a private hot spring with a living room and garden, where wellness sessions are sold for one or two people.

Two we checked that do not list one

Couples often ask about Aman Tokyo and Aman Kyoto. The Aman Tokyo spa menu lists eight treatment rooms and a 30-metre heated pool. The Aman Kyoto page lists three private treatment rooms and indoor and outdoor onsen, and no gym or pool. Neither mentions a couples' room or treatments for two, and neither published menu shows prices, so we would ask Aman directly first.

TOKYO HOTEL SPAS FOR COUPLES

All four Tokyo spas offer something to guests who are not staying, so you can stay at one hotel and spend an afternoon at another's spa.

Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi

The spa has five treatment rooms, including a couples' suite, beside a 20-metre indoor pool on the 39th floor. The hotel's couples page describes a 90-minute couples' spa ritual and a couples' treatment room where two people are treated side by side. The spa is open Monday to Thursday from 10:00 am to 8:30 pm, with last entry at 7:30 pm, and Friday to Sunday and holidays from 10:00 am to 9:30 pm, with last entry at 8:30 pm. Treatments, the ofuro and the steam bath are for guests aged 16 and over.

You do not need to stay at the hotel to use the pool. The Visitor Pool Access day pass gives two hours of the pool, mist chairs and vitality pool for JPY 15,000. The seasonal Rose and Yuzu Poultice Ritual, offered from October 1 to November 30, starts from JPY 51,800 for 75 minutes. The page does not say whether these prices include tax or service charge.

Janu Tokyo

Janu Tokyo in Azabudai Hills has two private Spa Houses, which the hotel calls the first of their kind in Tokyo. Each has a double treatment room, a living space with a daybed, an outdoor terrace, a cold plunge pool, a hot bath and either a banya, a wood-clad sauna, or a hammam, a marble steam room with a heated marble treatment table. Every Spa House experience on the day visitors' menu is for up to two guests.

The Banya Spa House Experience costs JPY 200,000 for two hours and JPY 333,000 for four hours. The four-hour version adds a body scrub, a 60-minute massage and a light meal. The Hammam Spa House Experience costs JPY 180,000 for two hours and JPY 300,000 for four. The Janu Tokyo Spa House Journey costs JPY 200,000 for three hours, with a 90-minute signature massage or facial and time in the Banya Spa House. All of these prices include the 15% service charge and 10% consumption tax. They run daily from 12 noon, with the last treatment ending at 9 pm, and cancellation needs 24 hours' notice.

The wellness brochure also lists a 25-metre pool, a Couple Treatment Room Add-On for regular treatments, and the 90-minute Janu Signature Massage at ¥50,600.

Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo

The spa is on the 37th floor in Nihonbashi and has four treatment rooms and five suites. The wellness page names single and couple spa suites. The spa brochure lists two treatments for two. Romance (2 hours 20 minutes) is a body exfoliation, time together in the steam shower of a private spa suite and a full-body massage each. Moments to Share (1 hour 30 minutes) pairs facials and body massages. The brochure publishes a price list, and says its prices include consumption tax and are subject to a service charge, but we could not read from it which price belongs to which treatment or whether it covers both of you, so we confirm the price for two with the spa before anything is proposed.

The spa is open from 10 am to 9 pm Monday to Thursday and from 10 am to 10 pm Friday to Sunday. For guests who are not staying, selected treatments may be available. A cancellation within 24 hours is charged in full.

The Peninsula Tokyo

The Peninsula Spa and Wellness Center, on the sixth floor, has nine treatment rooms. The spa treatment room for two can be reserved for JPY 13,000, subject to availability, and the hotel says that price includes 10% consumption tax. Treatments are charged separately. The Peninsula Signature Massage costs JPY 48,500 for 50 minutes or JPY 60,000 for 80 minutes, including consumption tax and a 15% service charge.

The spa is open from 10:00 am to 9:30 pm daily. Guests who are not staying can book, with the reservation guaranteed by credit card. The hotel also sells a half-day Pool and Thermal Day Experience with no overnight stay required. A 50% charge applies if you cancel less than 24 hours ahead, and the full price if you cancel less than 12 hours ahead.

KYOTO HOTEL SPAS FOR COUPLES

Of the three Kyoto spas below, one has its own hot spring water and two have an indoor pool.

Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto

The spa spans two floors, with seven treatment rooms, a 20-metre indoor pool, a large whirlpool and a fitness centre. The hotel's spa page offers Time Together, a couples' treatment experience, and says outside guests are welcome. The spa is open daily from 10:00 am to 9:00 pm, with last entry at 8:00 pm.

The Day Pass for guests who are not staying gives 180 minutes of the pool, jetted tub, gym, sauna, baths and relaxation lounge for JPY 18,000, daily from 7:00 am to 9:00 pm. Gym wear and swimsuits can be rented for JPY 2,200 per person. The seasonal Momiji Renewal, from September 1 to November 30, is a salt scrub followed by a massage and costs JPY 42,500 for 90 minutes. The page does not say whether these prices include tax or service charge.

The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto

The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto has a La Prairie Spa with seven treatment rooms, including a private spa suite. The spa's list of services includes couples massages. Guests can also use a 20-metre heated indoor pool, a steam room and a dry sauna. The spa is open daily from 9:00 am to 10:00 pm by appointment, and the pool from 6:30 am to 10:00 pm. The spa page we read gives no treatment prices and does not say whether guests who are not staying can book, so we ask the spa both questions before proposing it.

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO draws its own hot spring, Kyoto Nijo Onsen, from about 1,000 metres below the hotel. The Thermal Spring is a hot spring for men and women together, in swimsuits, open from 7am to 11pm for bathers aged 13 and over. The Private Onsen is over 100 square metres, with a wet living space, a mist sauna and its own garden, for one to four people. It is for registered hotel guests only and costs ¥25,000 for 60 minutes, ¥32,000 for 90 minutes and ¥39,000 for 120 minutes, with service charge and consumption tax included.

The hotel also sells 120-minute Wellness Sessions in the Private Onsen for one or two people at JPY 50,000. The spa has four treatment rooms and takes both staying guests and visitors. The Signature Treatment costs JPY 35,000 for 60 minutes, JPY 46,000 for 90 minutes or JPY 55,000 for 120 minutes. The treatment page does not say whether those prices include tax and service. The hotel states that it does not accept spa reservations from guests in the early stages of pregnancy.

STAY FOR THE SPA OR VISIT FOR THE DAY

You can stay at the hotel whose spa you want, or stay elsewhere and book the spa as a visitor.

When it is worth staying

Some facilities are for staying guests only. HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO's Private Onsen and its two-night SPA Indulgence programme, at JPY 292,000 for two persons, are only open to people staying at the hotel. Staying also changes the hours you can use. The Four Seasons Otemachi pool and ofuro open at 6:30 am, The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto pool runs until 10:00 pm, and the Mitsui hot spring runs from 7am to 11pm.

When a day visit works better

If you already have a hotel you love, a day visit lets you try a second spa without moving. Day passes are the cheaper route to a pool and baths: JPY 15,000 for two hours at Four Seasons Otemachi and JPY 18,000 for 180 minutes at Four Seasons Kyoto. Check what the visitor price includes: at Four Seasons Kyoto a treatment booking does not include the fitness centre, and at The Peninsula Tokyo the relaxation area is open only for the 60 minutes before your treatment.

The Peninsula, Mandarin Oriental and HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO all recommend an hour early if you want to use the baths first. If you are building a wider week around rest, our seven-day wellness itinerary for Tokyo, Hakone and Kyoto shows where a spa afternoon fits.

BATHS POOLS AND TATTOO RULES

In most of these spas the baths, steam rooms and saunas are in the men's and women's changing areas. You will bathe separately and meet again in the treatment room or at the pool. The Peninsula Tokyo's thermal suite and the Four Seasons Otemachi ofuro work this way. The Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo spa notes that it is Japanese custom to bathe without clothing in its heat and water areas.

Where you can bathe together

There are three ways to share the water. You can use a private space such as a Janu Spa House or the Mitsui Private Onsen. You can use a mixed hot spring in swimsuits, such as the Thermal Spring at HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO. Or you can swim together at the hotels with a pool, which include both Four Seasons hotels, Janu Tokyo, The Peninsula Tokyo and The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto. Aman Kyoto's onsen hours are temporarily adjusted for maintenance until October 18, 2026, with separate times for women and for men during that period.

Tattoos

Most of the spa pages we read do not mention tattoos at all. Mandarin Oriental, Tokyo is the exception: it advises guests to cover tattoos in its heat and water areas. A missing rule does not mean every area accepts tattoos. If either of you has a tattoo, a private Spa House, a private onsen or a couples' suite avoids the shared baths. We also ask each spa in writing before we propose it. Our guide to tattoo friendly onsen in Japan sets out published rules at onsen towns and hotel chains.

Age, health and pregnancy

The four Tokyo spas, Aman Tokyo and Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto all set 16 as the minimum age for treatments. Several say many treatments can be adapted for pregnancy, while HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO does not accept spa reservations in the early stages of pregnancy. If either of you is pregnant, has a health condition or has sensitive skin, ask the spa before choosing a treatment. We describe treatments as the hotels do and make no claims about what they will do for you.

HOW STAYGO PLANS IT

When a spa day matters to a couple, we start with how they want to spend it, because a massage side by side and time alone in hot water lead to different hotels. We then choose the hotel, check its spa against the dates, read the current rules for the rooms for two, the baths and tattoos, and send our questions to the spa in writing before we propose it. We gather the spa requests for both of you in one place, and while you are travelling we are the people you contact if a time needs to move. Nothing is promised until the hotel or spa has confirmed it.

You pay the hotels and spas directly, at their own prices, and we add no markup or commission. Our Signature planning fee is USD 3,500 for your group, for trips of 7 to 14 days. Longer or more complex trips are quoted as Bespoke. How we plan beauty and wellness travel more broadly is on beauty and wellness travel in Tokyo and Kyoto.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read each spa page and menu on the hotel's own website, or in the menu file linked from it, on October 15, 2026. Prices, times and tax wording are as published on that date. Where a page said nothing about tax, outside guests or tattoos, we say so in the text. Spa menus change with the season, so we check again with each spa before anything is arranged.
