Ten nights in Japan for a family of four from India, with four nights in Tokyo, two at a ryokan in Hakone and four in Kyoto, came to about ¥3.32 million on the ground at the published rates for January 11, 2027: about INR 20.1 lakh, or about US$21,150. Four business class seats between Delhi and Tokyo, at the lowest all-in fare JAL publishes for India, add about INR 8.4 lakh. Rooms are close to nine tenths of the ground cost, and the same two city hotels on May 24, 2027, inside the Indian summer holiday, cost about ¥1 million more.

Below, line by line, are the hotels and the ryokan we priced, the trains and cars, a temple lunch, the flights, and the taxes that sit on top of a room rate, followed by what STAYGO charges and why it is kept apart from all of this. We read every rate on the hotel's, inn's, airline's or operator's own page, and every tax on the official government page or the hotel's own notice, on November 2, 2026, and did not contact any of them; the sources are listed at the end. Conversions use the Financial Benchmarks India reference rates for October 26, 2026: INR 60.57 for ¥100 and INR 95.1549 for US$1. PRICE YOUR FAMILY'S DATES →

A TEN NIGHT BUDGET FOR A FAMILY OF FOUR

The family in this example is two parents and two children aged 12 or over. That age matters in Japan: hotels count them as guests in their own right, and the railways charge them adult fares. Each line below prices every night at the published rate for January 11, 2027, as if the whole stay cost what that night did. The car and train lines use the operators' published fares.

WHAT THE ROOMS COST

Tokyo

Palace Hotel Tokyo, beside the gardens of the Imperial Palace, quotes its rates with tax and service included. On January 11, 2027 its lowest room-only rate for a Deluxe King of 45 m² was ¥131,560 for two, free to cancel until 14:59 the day before. A family of four takes two rooms. Tokyo's accommodation tax is ¥200 per person a night on rooms of ¥15,000 or more per person; from April 1, 2027 it becomes 3 percent of the room charge.

A ryokan in Hakone

A ryokan prices by the guest and usually includes dinner and breakfast, so its rate cannot be set beside a hotel's room-only rate. Gora Kadan, which the MICHELIN Guide lists with 41 rooms, some with open-air baths of wood or stone, is a good example. Its Standard Room Type A, with a main room, a second room and a cypress bath, takes one to four guests. With its seasonal kaiseki plan, four guests paid ¥235,400 a night on January 11, 2027, tax and service included, or ¥58,850 each. For a vegetarian family the meals matter more than the room: the inn asks to hear of dietary needs by 6 p.m. the day before arrival, and offers children's meals for children under 13. Gora Kadan's booking page showed no rooms for four on May 24, 2027, a reminder that the best inns are often the first thing to settle.

Kyoto

HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO, near Nijo Castle, quotes totals with tax and service and adds Kyoto's tax at the hotel. Its Deluxe Twin of 47 m² was ¥170,776 a night for two on January 11, 2027, room only, and takes one to three guests. Children aged 12 and under sharing their parents' beds stay free, and an extra bed can be requested. Its hot spring is open to children aged 4 to 12 between 9:00 and 17:00, and its private hot spring bath costs ¥24,500 for 60 minutes. The hotel's notice sets out Kyoto's accommodation tax, charged on the room-only rate per person before tax and service: ¥4,000 a night from ¥50,000, and ¥10,000 from ¥100,000. How the great inns compare is set out in Japan's Finest Ryokans for Indian Travellers.

SUMMER HOLIDAYS AND THE SEASON

The date moves the total more than any choice of restaurant. For the night of May 24, 2027, in the season of the Indian summer holiday (Delhi's government schools broke from May 11 to June 30 in 2026), Palace Hotel Tokyo's Deluxe King was ¥184,690 and HOTEL THE MITSUI KYOTO's Deluxe Twin ¥240,350. For the same eight nights in two rooms each, that is about ¥980,000 more than in January, while Kyoto's tax stays at ¥4,000 per person a night. The busiest weeks for Japan itself are the cherry blossom weeks, the May holidays and the autumn colour, and the earlier a family's dates are fixed, the more of the good rooms are still open.

CARS, TRAINS AND A GUIDE

Tokyo MK publishes its private hire rates with tax included: Narita from ¥45,000 and Haneda from ¥17,000 in an Alphard or Mercedes V-Class, and eight hours in Tokyo, up to 120 km, from ¥74,000. Tolls and parking are extra, and cars are requested at least three days ahead. More on drivers is in private driver costs in Japan.

On the Shinkansen, JR Central's fare search gives a Green Car seat on the Nozomi between Tokyo and Kyoto at ¥19,040, from Tokyo to Odawara for Hakone at ¥4,580, and from Odawara to Kyoto at ¥17,380. Children aged 6 to 11 pay half the fare, but the Green Car charge is the same for a child as for an adult, and children aged 1 to 5 travel free unless they take a seat of their own. JR Central and JR West will raise the Green Car charge for journeys from December 15, 2027.

A licensed guide is not in the table above. Published rates, and what a guide adds, are set out in what a private guide in Japan costs.

RESTAURANTS AND EXPERIENCES

A vegetarian family eats very well in Japan, and not always expensively. Shigetsu, the restaurant of Tenryu-ji in Arashiyama and a MICHELIN Bib Gourmand, serves shojin ryori, the temple cuisine, at lunch: the Yuki set at ¥3,800, Tsuki at ¥6,500 and Hana at ¥9,000, with ¥500 for the garden and no service charge. A Jain table asks the kitchen for more than a vegetarian one, and how to arrange it is set out in Vegetarian and Jain Dining in Japan. Japan's national tourism organisation notes that tipping is not customary in restaurants, taxis or hotels.

Private experiences, a tea ceremony for the family or a morning with a craftsman, are priced by the host and vary widely. What they look like is in Japan's Most Exclusive Private Experiences.

FLIGHTS FROM INDIA

JAL flies twice daily between Delhi and Tokyo, to Narita and Haneda, and daily between Bengaluru and Narita. Its India page lists all-in round trip fares from Delhi from INR 72,545 in economy, INR 1,36,234 in premium economy and INR 2,10,845 in business class, for tickets bought between October 20 and November 5, 2026 and travel until September 30, 2027. The fares include taxes and fuel surcharges at the exchange rates of October 13, 2026, and business class carries three bags of 32 kg each. ANA's India page showed round trip economy fares from Delhi to Haneda from INR 86,741 for December 2026 departures. Fares move daily, so we price them for your dates.

A SEASON OF ONE'S OWN

The car is waiting when the family comes through arrivals. The bags go ahead to the hotel, and the children fall asleep before the city begins. Two days later, at the ryokan, dinner arrives at the hour that was agreed: the grandmother's tray without onion or garlic, the children's dishes smaller and simpler, every course checked with the kitchen a week before. Nobody at the table needs to explain anything.

A JOURNEY DESIGNED AROUND ONE FAMILY

A published group itinerary is priced for the room types, hotels and days that suit most travellers, and for many people that is the right choice. A journey designed for one family is priced from the other direction: the rooms that keep the family close, the dates the schools allow, the kitchens that will cook for the grandmother, and the pace the youngest can keep. The cost rises or falls with each of those choices, and the family sees each one before it is made.

WHAT STAYGO CHARGES, AND WHAT IT DOES NOT

STAYGO's planning fee is flat and quoted before any work begins. The Signature plan is USD 3,500 for your group, about INR 3.3 lakh, and covers a journey of 7 to 14 days. Anything longer or more complex is Bespoke, priced after a first conversation. Everything in the table above sits outside that fee. We arrange the hotels, ryokan, restaurants, cars and guides in your names, and you pay each of them directly at their own rates, with no commission or markup from us. Adding a night at a ryokan or removing a guide day changes what you pay them. It does not change what you pay us. The reasoning is set out in what a bespoke Japan trip costs.

Your journey through Japan, thoughtfully arranged. Explore bespoke travel with STAYGO.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read the pages below on November 2, 2026: the hotels' and ryokan's own booking pages for the January 11 and May 24, 2027 rates; the airlines' India pages for fares; JR Central and Tokyo MK for trains and cars; the Tokyo Metropolitan Government and the Kyoto hotel's notice for taxes; the temple restaurant, the MICHELIN Guide and Japan's national tourism organisation for the rest; and Financial Benchmarks India and Delhi's Directorate of Education for the rupee and the school holiday. We did not contact any hotel, inn, restaurant, airline or operator. Rates change, so we price them again for your dates.
