For a family in Singapore, the year in Japan is set by the school calendar before anything else. On July 14, 2026 the Ministry of Education published the 2027 dates for primary and secondary schools and MOE Kindergartens: a spring break from Saturday, March 13 to Sunday, March 21, the mid-year holiday from Saturday, May 29 to Sunday, June 27, a September break from Saturday, September 4 to Sunday, September 12, and the year-end holiday from Saturday, November 20. The Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) notes in its market handbook that many Singapore families travel in exactly these short spring and autumn weeks.

This article takes each of the four windows and asks the question a returning family really has: in that particular week, which part of Japan is at its finest, which Japanese holidays share the calendar, and how seven nights with children can rest on no more than two bases. We read the official pages of Singapore's Ministry of Education, Japan's Cabinet Office, the Japan Meteorological Agency, the Japan Tourism Agency, JNTO, two hotels and the Niseko HANAZONO resort on November 5, 2026, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. How long to stay in Japan overall is covered in How Many Days in Japan? 5, 7, 10 and 14 Day Plans (2026), and the pace of travel with children and grandparents in Luxury Family Travel in Japan.

WHY THE CALENDAR DECIDES THE JOURNEY

Singapore travellers know Japan well. In the Japan Tourism Agency's survey for 2025, only 24.7% of visitors from Singapore were in Japan for the first time, and 27.4% were on their sixth visit or more. They stayed 9.1 nights on average and spent 319,901 yen per person, 9.9% more than a year earlier. JNTO observes that the more often Singaporeans return, the better they know the regions, and that Hokkaido alone accounted for 11.4% of the nights Singapore guests spent in Japanese hotels in 2023, with the east of the island gaining ground among repeat visitors.

For families, JNTO names the school holidays as the most promising time to travel, describes learning as one of Japan's strengths, and notes that children under 20 also take part in gathering ideas for the trip. It also records that airfares from Singapore to Japan rise in the mid-year and year-end holidays. A seven-night week fits inside each of the three shorter breaks, and the question for 2027 becomes which Japan suits which week.

MARCH 13 TO 21: LATE SNOW AND THE FIRST BLOSSOM

Mid-March is the one school week of the year when deep snow and early spring sit a short flight apart. The Meteorological Agency's averages for Kutchan, the town beside Niseko, give 122 cm of new snow in March and an average deepest snow of 170 cm, with a mean temperature of minus 1.0°C. The snow school at Niseko HANAZONO runs its spring season from March 1 to April 11, 2027. Its full private day lasts six hours, starts between 8:30 and 10:00, takes up to six people with multilingual instructors, and children may take it on their own. Park Hyatt Niseko Hanazono stands on the slope as a ski-in, ski-out hotel, and its Signature Suites each have a terrace and balcony facing Mount Yotei and a private natural hot spring.

Tokyo, at the other end of the week, averages a high of 14.2°C in March. The Agency's average date for the first cherry blossom there is March 24 and in Kyoto March 26, so a family flying home on March 21 usually leaves just before the flowers. In an early year the timing changes: Tokyo's trees opened on March 19 in 2026. We therefore place Tokyo at the end, four nights in Niseko followed by three in the city, so that in an early year the city may greet you with its first flowers. Wider winter journeys are in Japan in Winter: Snow Monkeys and Powder, and the choice between blossom and autumn colour in Cherry Blossom vs Autumn Leaves in Japan: Which to Choose.

MAY 29 TO JUNE 27: HOKKAIDO WHILE THE RAINS FALL SOUTH

The long mid-year break falls in Japan's rainy season. The Meteorological Agency's averages for 1991 to 2020 place its start around May 10 in Okinawa, June 6 in the Kinki region around Kyoto and Osaka, June 7 in the Kanto region around Tokyo and June 11 in Hokuriku, and its end around July 19 to 23 in those three regions of the main island. Hokkaido does not appear in these tables at all. Sapporo averages a high of 21.8°C in June, a low of 13.4°C and 60.4 mm of rain, against a high of 26.1°C and 167.8 mm in Tokyo and 199.7 mm in Kyoto.

JNTO notes that Singapore guests, who long saw Hokkaido as a winter place, now also come for the lavender of June and July, and that summer drives across the island have become a favourite way to travel. For a family we suggest starting with three nights in Tokyo in the first days of the break, before the average start of the Kanto rains, then flying north for four nights by Lake Toya. The Windsor Hotel Toya offers a G8 Summit Suite with two bedrooms across 152 square metres, enough for the whole family to wake in the same place. Couples' rooms and the island's two seasons are compared in Hokkaido Honeymoon: Summer or Winter, and Where to Stay (2027).

SEPTEMBER 4 TO 12: THE COOL OF KARUIZAWA

The September break begins in effect a day early. MOE lists Teachers' Day, Friday, September 3, as a school holiday, so families can fly out on the Thursday night and gain a full extra day. Early September in Tokyo is still summer, with an average high of 27.5°C and a low of 20.3°C. Karuizawa, in the mountains of Nagano, averages 21.7°C and 13.0°C in the same month, a change felt most in the evenings.

HOSHINOYA Karuizawa gives Tokyo travel time as about 80 minutes by the Hokuriku Shinkansen, then about 15 minutes by taxi from Karuizawa Station. It has 77 rooms; its Mizunami rooms take one to four guests across 57 to 68 square metres, children under 12 may share their parents' beds up to the room's capacity, and the resort keeps a kids' room. Three nights in Tokyo and four in Karuizawa make an unhurried week. September has the most typhoon landfalls of any month, 1.0 a year on average against 0.9 in August, so we leave one day without fixed plans. The same line runs on to Kanazawa for a family that would rather end in a castle town; see Kanazawa: The Golden Route Stop to Slow Down.

FROM NOVEMBER 20: THE LONG BREAK IN BRIEF

The year-end holiday runs from Saturday, November 20 to Friday, December 31, and JNTO notes that this is also when Singapore airfares to Japan rise. Its first week falls in the autumn colour season around Kyoto, where November averages a high of 17.3°C, and that week has its own article, Autumn Leaves in Late November. Later in December the snow returns to Niseko, with an average of 253 cm of new snow at Kutchan for the month, and the break can carry a longer journey than a week.

WHERE JAPAN'S OWN HOLIDAYS MEET YOURS

The Cabinet Office's list of 2027 national holidays shows how little the Singapore calendar collides with Japan's. In March, the Vernal Equinox Day falls on Sunday the 21st and the Monday after becomes a substitute holiday, so Japan has a three-day weekend from March 20 to 22. Those are the last two days of the Singapore break, and we secure trains, flights and dinner tables for them early.

Between Children's Day on May 5 and Marine Day on July 19 Japan has no national holiday at all, so the whole mid-year break runs through ordinary weeks. In September, Respect for the Aged Day on Monday the 20th and the Autumnal Equinox Day on Thursday the 23rd both come after the children are back in class. In November, Labour Thanksgiving Day falls on Tuesday the 23rd, in the first week of the year-end holiday. How Japan's busiest periods play out is explained in Japan's Holiday Blackouts: When to Travel.

SEVEN NIGHTS AND TWO BASES WITH CHILDREN

With children, the week works best when it rests on two places and the second stay is the longer one. Every move eats into a day, and children settle once their things are unpacked. A car meets the family at each airport and station, rooms are chosen so that the family can share one door or one suite, and each base holds one morning of learning, a ski lesson, a craft or a garden visit with a guide, since JNTO names learning as one of the things Japan offers families best.

Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, we arrange the hotels and suites, the ski school, the guides, the cars and the restaurant tables, and settle each in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day. When a hotel lists connecting rooms only on request, we ask for them in writing before anything is confirmed. A March in Niseko and Tokyo, a June in Tokyo and Lake Toya, or a September in Tokyo and Karuizawa all fit inside the MOE calendar with a day to spare.

QUESTIONS TRAVELLERS ASK

When are the Singapore school holidays in 2027?

For MOE primary and secondary schools and MOE Kindergartens: March 13 to 21, May 29 to June 27, September 4 to 12, and November 20 to December 31, 2027. Teachers' Day on Friday, September 3 is also a school holiday.

Is June a good time to take children to Japan?

Yes, if the week leans north. Most of Japan is in its rainy season from early June, but the Meteorological Agency dates no rainy season for Hokkaido, and Sapporo averages a June high of 21.8°C with 60.4 mm of rain.

Will the March school holiday catch the cherry blossoms?

Usually only at the very end, if at all. Tokyo's average first bloom is March 24 and Kyoto's March 26, after the break ends on March 21. In 2026 Tokyo flowered on March 19.

Do Japanese public holidays fall in the 2027 MOE holidays?

Only twice. Japan has a three-day weekend from March 20 to 22, and Labour Thanksgiving Day falls on Tuesday, November 23. There are no Japanese national holidays in June or in the September break.

How many bases suit a seven-night family trip?

Two at most, with the longer stay second. Three nights in Tokyo and four in Hokkaido or Karuizawa, or four in Niseko and three in Tokyo in March, keeps moves to one.
