In India, weddings gather in the cool, clear months from October to March, and honeymoons follow close behind. The Japan National Tourism Organization notes this in its market handbook for India, together with the places couples have traditionally chosen: Europe, the United States and Australia, and nearer home the Maldives, Mauritius, Dubai and Singapore, with Thailand and Bali now joining them. Japan is a newer name on that list, and its season happens to fall in exactly the same months.
From October to March, Japan moves through late autumn colour, clear winter days and snow, and the first cherry blossom. Each wedding date leads to a different honeymoon, and this article follows them month by month, with the places that suit a couple who expect a world-class hotel and something only Japan can give. We read the pages of JNTO, the Japan Meteorological Agency, three hotels and ryokan, a Japanese inbound tourism journal and the airlines' announcements on November 5, 2026, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. A full 10 to 14 day route is laid out in A Luxury Japan Honeymoon Itinerary: 10 to 14 Days, and every month of the year in Best Time for a Honeymoon in Japan: Month by Month (2027).
Key points
- JNTO's handbook notes that Indian weddings concentrate between October and March, and that honeymoons rise in the same months.
- For a November wedding, Kyoto's autumn colour comes late. In the 1991 to 2020 normals, maple colour reaches the Kinki region, which includes Kyoto, between early and mid December.
- From December to February, Hokkaido offers snow with a bath of your own. Each of the 15 villas at Zaborin in Niseko has a private indoor and outdoor hot spring bath.
- For a February wedding, March brings the first cherry blossom. Kyoto's normal flowering date is March 26 and full bloom April 4; in 2021 to 2026 the first flowers opened between March 16 and March 29.
- Japan is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India, and daily flights link Narita with Delhi and Mumbai, so the first days are not lost to jet lag.
WHY THE WEDDING SEASON SUITS JAPAN
For many couples the honeymoon comes days after the last function, tired from weeks of family and celebration. Japan asks little of them on arrival. It is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India Standard Time, so bodies adjust within a day. JAL has flown daily between Narita and Delhi since January 17, 2026, beside its Haneda to Delhi and Narita to Bengaluru services, and ANA resumed daily flights between Mumbai and Narita from March 29, 2026.
The hotels that suit these couples are clear too. Yamatogokoro, a Japanese journal on inbound travel, writes that the wealthiest Indian travellers choose international luxury brands first and then look for a Japanese essence on top: rooms with an open-air bath, a tea ceremony, matcha and wagashi, and a staff that answers each request personally. The places below are chosen in that spirit.
NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER IN KYOTO
A wedding in early or mid November leaves a couple perfectly placed for Kyoto. In the Japan Meteorological Agency's normals for 1991 to 2020, maple colour reaches the Kinki region between early and mid December, later than many travellers assume, so the last days of November and the first of December are the weeks we hold for Kyoto. The exact days vary each year and from garden to garden, so we follow the reports and adjust the order of the days.
Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto stands beside Nijo Castle on the site of the Kyoto home of the Kitake, the head branch of the Mitsui family, which kept the property for more than 250 years. Its 160 rooms reinterpret the traditional tearoom in natural materials. Its thermal spring rises from a source about 1,000 m beneath the hotel, and bathers wear swimsuits, so a couple can bathe together. For something more private, the hotel's private onsen covers more than 100 m², with its own Japanese garden, and is reserved for staying guests; some suites have access to a natural onsen of their own. Other ryokan with baths in the room are compared in Kyoto Ryokan with Private Onsen: Where to Find Them.
DECEMBER TO FEBRUARY IN THE SNOW
For a December or January wedding, the snow of Hokkaido gives the honeymoon a setting no beach can offer. Sapporo averages minus 3.2°C in January, and the cold is part of the pleasure when the evening ends in hot water under falling snow. In Niseko, Zaborin has 15 villas, each a suite with its own indoor and outdoor bath fed by the hot spring beneath the ryokan. Its chef, Yoshihiro Seno, cooks what the house calls Kita Kaiseki, a northern reading of Kyoto kaiseki built on local produce. For couples who come in early February, the Sapporo Snow Festival can fill one evening. Rooms, seasons and taxes for couples are covered in Hokkaido Honeymoon: Summer or Winter, and Where to Stay (2027).
A NIGHT NEAR FUJI IN HAKONE
Hakone, a short journey from Tokyo, is the place for a first ryokan night when Hokkaido feels too far. Gora Kadan stands within the historic grounds of the Kan'in-no-miya villa, once a summer retreat of the Imperial Family; the word kadan was used by imperial households for residences where they received foreign dignitaries, and the villa served in that spirit until 1948. On a clear winter morning, the mountains around Hakone and, on the right days, Fuji itself stand sharp in the cold air. We ask for rooms with their own open-air bath, and confirm the room type in writing before anything is settled.
MARCH AND THE FIRST CHERRY BLOSSOM
For a wedding in February, the honeymoon can wait a few weeks for the cherry blossom. The Meteorological Agency's normal date for the first flowers in Kyoto is March 26, with full bloom on April 4. Over 2021 to 2026, Kyoto's first flowers opened as early as March 16 and as late as March 29, so we hold the Kyoto nights in the middle of that window and keep the days around them flexible.
JNTO reports that cherry blossom demand lifted arrivals from India in March 2024 above April and June, and that hotels in Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto and Hiroshima fill early in the blossom weeks. A March honeymoon is therefore best settled by the time the wedding cards are printed. For a warm ending after the blossom, Okinawa takes three or four nights well, as described in Ending a Japan Honeymoon in Okinawa: The Last Nights and the Way Home to Madrid.
THE TABLE FOR TWO
JNTO notes that Indian travellers often find vegetarian dishes unmarked in Japan. A honeymoon cannot leave that to chance. We write to every kitchen before the journey, whether the couple eats vegetarian, avoids onion and garlic, or follows Jain rules, and confirm each answer before the dates are fixed. With notice, we ask Kyoto kitchens and ryokan for a vegetarian kaiseki, and a temple meal of shojin ryori gives one lunch that is meat-free by tradition. Our full guide is Vegetarian and Jain Dining in Japan: A Luxury Traveler's Guide.
HOW WE SHAPE THE JOURNEY
Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, a honeymoon usually spends three or four nights in Tokyo, one or two in Hakone, and four in Kyoto, with Hokkaido or Okinawa added for a longer journey. We arrange the hotels and ryokan, the cars, the private guides and the dinners, and settle each in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day. We send the luggage ahead between cities, so the two of you travel light.

QUESTIONS COUPLES ASK
When are the autumn leaves at their best in Kyoto?
Usually from the last days of November into early December. In the 1991 to 2020 normals, maple colour reaches the Kinki region between early and mid December, and it varies by year and by garden.
When does the cherry blossom open in Kyoto?
The normal date for the first flowers is March 26 and for full bloom April 4. Between 2021 and 2026 the first flowers opened between March 16 and March 29.

Yes, in the right places. At Hotel The Mitsui Kyoto the thermal spring is used in swimsuits, and its private onsen is for your party alone. In a ryokan, a room with its own bath gives the same privacy.
Can a ryokan cook vegetarian or Jain meals?
Many can, with notice. We write to each kitchen in advance with your rules and confirm the answers before the dates are fixed.
What is the time difference between India and Japan?
Japan is 3 hours 30 minutes ahead of India Standard Time.
