Japan's bullet train network has three seat classes: ordinary, Green Car, and — from October 1, 2026 — Supreme Class. JR Central and JR West are introducing fully private lockable cabins to the Tokaido and Sanyo Shinkansen, the routes connecting Tokyo with Nagoya, Osaka, Hiroshima, and Hakata. This is the first time private rooms have appeared on the Tokaido Shinkansen in over two decades.

There are exactly two cabins per train. The scarcity is deliberate. Here is what Supreme Class is, what it costs, and who it makes sense for.

THE TWO CABINS

Car 7 · Double Cabin
The Two-Person Room
Capacity
1–2 persons
Layout
Seat + Sofa
Tokyo → Osaka
¥60,500

Car 7 is the larger of the two cabins. A reclining seat faces Hakata; a sofa faces Tokyo — two passengers traveling together can sit facing each other. Large suitcase storage and an extra table are included. This is the only Supreme Class option for couples or business pairs.

Car 10 · Single Cabin
The Solo Room
Capacity
1 person
Layout
Seat only
Tokyo → Osaka
¥42,100

Car 10 is a single-occupancy cabin with a reclining seat facing Tokyo. More compact than Car 7, it offers the same lockable door, privacy, and onboard services at a lower price point. For a solo traveler who wants the private room experience without paying for two-person capacity, Car 10 is the practical choice.

WHAT'S INSIDE

Standard in both cabins

"Supreme Class is sold only through SmartEX and Express Reservation. No paper tickets are issued. The cabin door is unlocked using the IC card or QR code tied to your booking — the same card you use at the gate."

PRICING IN CONTEXT

All prices below are SmartEX / Express Reservation rates, fare inclusive.

¥55,400
¥63,620
Supreme — Car 7 (duo)
¥60,500
¥77,660
¥90,220

The Car 7 price covers the room — not per person. Two passengers sharing it pay ¥60,500 total for Tokyo–Osaka, or ¥30,250 each. At that split, the per-person premium over Green Car is approximately ¥10,000.

The longer the journey, the more the per-kilometer premium decreases. Tokyo–Hakata by Car 10 works out to roughly ¥40 per kilometer above ordinary class — significantly less than the Tokyo–Osaka ratio.

HOW TO BOOK

Reservations open September 15, 2026 at 5:30 AM Japan time via SmartEX (スマートEX) or Express Reservation (EX予約). These are JR Central's ticketless booking platforms — you will need to register before September 15 if you do not already have an account.

Foreign visitors can use SmartEX with an overseas credit card. The cabin door is unlocked at boarding using either the IC card registered to your account (Suica, ICOCA, etc.) or a QR code displayed in the app. There is no physical ticket to collect.

With only two cabins per train and initial availability limited to 12 daily services, demand on launch day will be significant. Booking at 5:30 AM on September 15 is strongly recommended for anyone targeting specific trains.

"STAYGO can handle SmartEX registration and Supreme Class booking as part of a Japan itinerary. For clients who want the cabin secured without navigating the Japanese-language booking interface, this is included in Signature and Bespoke planning."

WHO IT IS ACTUALLY FOR

The Tokaido Shinkansen connects Tokyo with Japan's most visited destinations. A Tokyo–Kyoto trip (passengers typically disembark at Kyoto or Shin-Osaka) takes 2h15 on Nozomi. Tokyo–Hiroshima is under 4 hours. These are not long-haul segments — they are city transfers that become the journey itself in Supreme Class.

The cabin makes the most sense for three types of travelers. First, business travelers or working professionals who want a productive, undisturbed environment for calls or focused work between cities — the Wi-Fi, Bluetooth speakers, and door lock create a genuine office in motion. Second, couples who want privacy on what is otherwise a shared public transport experience. Third, travelers who have experienced Japan's ordinary and Green Car classes and want to understand what the top of the network actually looks like.

It does not replace the Gran Class experience on the Hokuriku or Tohoku Shinkansen for pure comfort — those seats recline further and the service is different. But Supreme Class offers something those routes cannot: the world's most punctual high-speed rail corridor, a private room, and arrival in central Osaka or Hiroshima in under four hours from Tokyo station.

EXPANSION TIMELINE

Service begins October 1, 2026 on 12 daily trains. JR Central plans to expand this to approximately 30 trains by March 2027 (8 trainsets) and 65 trains by March 2028 (31 trainsets). The semi-private Supreme Class Seat variant — 6 seats per train in car 10 — launches during FY2027.

In the first months of service, train availability will be limited and demand will be concentrated. Travelers planning Japan trips in late 2026 or early 2027 who want to experience Supreme Class should treat it as a reservation priority, not an afterthought.
