Most first journeys to Japan follow the same line: Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka. For a family from the Gulf, the question comes in the second week, or on the second trip: where to go once the great cities have been seen. Our answer for October and November is the Seto Inland Sea, a calm sea of green islands a short train ride west of Osaka, where the summer heat has gone and the days are still warm enough to sit outside.
This article sets out the autumn weather, the journey from Kyoto and Osaka, the finest ways to stay on and beside the water, moving between islands by private boat, where the autumn colour is, and how a large family fits. We read the Japan Meteorological Agency's normals, the pages of the hotels, ryokan, railways and tourism bodies, and Japanese and Arabic trade press, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. For Onomichi and Setoda in detail, see Onomichi and Setoda on the Seto Inland Sea →.
Key points
- In Okayama, Hiroshima and Takamatsu the average daily high is about 23 °C in October and about 17 °C in November, against about 33 °C in August in Okayama and Hiroshima.
- Okayama is about 44 minutes from Shin-Osaka and about an hour from Kyoto by Nozomi, according to Okayama City, and Hiroshima is about 34 minutes beyond it.
- guntû, a floating ryokan of 17 cabins, sails from Bella Vista Marina in Onomichi, and seven of its suites have an open-air cypress bath.
- The Setouchi Triennale was last held in 2025 and returns in 2028, so autumn 2027 is a year without the festival crowds on the islands.
- Korakuen in Okayama and Momijidani on Miyajima turn colour in mid to late November, when the garden and Okayama Castle are also lit at night.

WHY AUTUMN SUITS THE INLAND SEA
The Japan Meteorological Agency's normals for 1991 to 2020 tell the story plainly. In Okayama the average daily high is 33.3 °C in August, 23.4 °C in October and 17.1 °C in November. Hiroshima reads 32.8, 23.7 and 17.7. Takamatsu, across the water on Shikoku, has a daily high of 23.2 °C in October and 17.5 °C in November. Rain falls away as the season goes on: Okayama averages 95.4 mm in October and 53.3 mm in November, and Takamatsu 120.1 mm and 55.0 mm. Evenings cool quickly in November, with an average low of 6.8 °C in Okayama, so a light coat belongs in the car for the boat ride home.
Japan's own tourism office has noticed what this means for the Gulf. In an interview with the Japanese trade paper Travel Voice in October 2025, the head of the Japan National Tourism Organization's Dubai office said that travellers from the region stay ten days to two weeks, travel as families, and long for green nature, and that the office would present summer in Hokkaido and autumn on the Seto Inland Sea, among other themes, as the next destinations after the Golden Route. A JNTO discussion published by Jalan Research Center in November 2025 added that arrivals from the region dip in summer, when Japan is thought of as hot, and rise again in autumn. In July 2025 the Arabic trade paper Tourism Daily News reported a JNTO campaign across the Gulf states built around destinations beyond Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka.
FROM KYOTO AND OSAKA BY TRAIN
The Inland Sea is closer to the Golden Route than most visitors expect. Okayama City's visitor guide gives about 44 minutes from Shin-Osaka to Okayama by Nozomi or Mizuho, about an hour from Kyoto, and about 34 minutes on from Okayama to Hiroshima. Okayama is the natural door: Korakuen is about 15 minutes from the station by bus, according to the prefecture, and the port of Uno for Naoshima is about 50 minutes beyond it by the JR Uno Line, according to Benesse Art Site Naoshima.
Between Okayama and Hiroshima lies Fukuyama, the Shinkansen station for Onomichi and the islands of the Shimanami Kaido. guntû runs a car service between Fukuyama Station or Hiroshima Airport and its marina on embarkation and disembarkation days. For a family of three generations with luggage, we usually move by train with a car waiting at each station, or by car the whole way along the coast; what a driver costs for a full day is set out in Private Driver in Japan Cost: Tokyo, Airport and Day Trip Rates →.
GUNTÛ AND THE ISLAND HOTELS
The most complete way to see the Inland Sea is to sleep on it. guntû is a floating ryokan of 17 wood-panelled cabins that departs from and returns to Bella Vista Marina in Onomichi. Its own suite list gives five types: one guntû Suite and two Grand Suites, two Terrace Suites Prestige of 90 square metres with both an inside and an open-air bath, two Terrace Suites with an open-air bath, and ten Terrace Suites with an inside bath. Seven suites in all have an open-air cypress bath. Its current route list runs from three-day to five-day voyages, and it notes that the seasons of summer and autumn on the Inland Sea are felt aboard the ship.
On land, Azumi Setoda occupies a former merchant estate on the island of Ikuchijima, about an hour by car from Fukuyama Station or about 30 minutes by boat from Mihara Port, by its own figures. On Naoshima, Benesse House is a museum and a hotel in one, spread across four buildings named Museum, Oval, Park and Beach; the islands of art are covered in Beyond Naoshima: Seto Inland Sea Art Islands →. The resort hotel beside guntû's marina, Bella Vista Spa & Marina Onomichi, closed in January 2025 and is being rebuilt, so for now the marina is a place of departure, with nights on land spent in Setoda, Onomichi or Okayama.
AUTUMN COLOUR ALONG THE COAST
Korakuen in Okayama is one of Japan's three great gardens, a feudal lord's garden of the Edo period laid out with wide lawns and flowing streams, with the black keep of Okayama Castle rising beyond the trees. The prefecture's tourism site says the garden and the castle are lit at night in the season of the autumn leaves, from mid to late November. An early morning in the garden, before the day's visitors, and an evening return for the lights make a gentle first day on the coast after the train from Kyoto.
Further west, Miyajima's Momijidani, the maple valley behind Itsukushima Shrine at the foot of Mount Misen, is at its best in mid to late November, according to nippon.com. At its entrance stands Iwaso, a ryokan founded in 1854, with four single-storey detached cottages among its rooms. Hiroshima and Miyajima have their own article, Hiroshima & Miyajima: Beyond the Atomic Bomb Narrative →; for comparing autumn with spring, see Cherry Blossom vs Autumn Leaves in Japan: Which to Choose →.
BETWEEN THE ISLANDS BY PRIVATE BOAT
The public ferries are reliable and modest in number. The boat from Uno Port to Naoshima takes about 20 minutes and runs to a fixed timetable, and a missed boat can cost the afternoon. A chartered boat removes that concern. It waits at the pier while the family lingers over lunch, takes the grandparents straight across while the young ones walk, and can run along the coast at the hour when the islands turn gold. The same holds for a family crossing to Setoda from Mihara or Onomichi: the boat keeps to the family's timetable.
The calendar helps in 2027. The official Setouchi Triennale site states that the 2025 festival has concluded and that the next is in 2028. In festival years the ferries and the island rooms fill months ahead. In the years between, the museums keep their usual days and the islands return to their quieter pace.
A LARGE FAMILY ON THE SEA
Families from the Gulf often travel as a whole household, with grandparents and children together, and value privacy above all. The Jalan Research Center discussion notes a clear preference for a bath in the room over a shared public bath, and that is how we choose: guntû's suites with their own open-air bath, ryokan with detached cottages, and hotel rooms close enough to one another that the family can move between them without passing through public spaces. A suite on guntû such as the Terrace Suite Prestige accommodates three guests, so a larger family takes several suites together, and on land we ask each house which rooms connect or sit side by side.
At table, no pork and no alcohol is the minimum we request from every kitchen, written down in advance, and strict halal is arranged where a family asks for it; the restaurants that can do this are set out in Halal Fine Dining in Japan: Halal Wagyu, Kaiseki, Prayer Rooms →. Prayer times are built into each day's plan, and a quiet room is arranged where a long day out requires one. English is enough throughout, and one coordinator holds every detail so that the family speaks to one person.
WHERE STAYGO COMES IN
A first week in Tokyo and Kyoto followed by five or six days on the Inland Sea makes a natural shape for a journey of two weeks or more. Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, we draw the Inland Sea leg around the family: the train from Kyoto, the cars at each station, the garden in the morning, the boat at the hour that suits the grandparents, and the rooms and meals agreed with each house before you arrive. For how a second journey differs from a first, see Japan First Trip vs Second Trip: Routes, Days and Ryokan →.
The hotels, ryokan, cars and boats are arranged by us and settled with each of them in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day. Rooms on guntû and at Benesse House are limited, so for an autumn journey we request them as early as each house allows.
