Okinawa is the part of Japan most American travelers leave out. In the Japan Tourism Agency's 2025 survey, 3.4% of American leisure travelers went there, against 92.1% who visited Tokyo. Yet Lonely Planet chose Okinawa for its Best in Travel 2027, and for many journeys it is the best possible ending: a few days of warm sea and slow mornings after the trains and temples of the mainland.
This article is about fitting Okinawa into a longer journey: how long the flights take, where the islands belong in the order of a trip, how many nights to give them, which island suits which purpose, and which months to avoid. We read the official pages of the prefecture's tourism bureau, Shuri Castle Park, the Japan Meteorological Agency and the resorts, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. For couples, our guide to islands and resorts is Okinawa Honeymoon: Islands, Resorts and When to Go →.
Key points
- Haneda to Naha takes about 2 hours 20 minutes, and Kansai to Naha about 1 hour 50 minutes.
- Okinawa fits best at the end of a mainland journey, for three to five nights.
- The main island suits a first visit; Miyako and Ishigaki can be reached directly from Tokyo and Osaka.
- Typhoons approach Okinawa most often from July to October, with August the peak month on average.
- Shuri Castle's rebuilt main hall opens on November 23, 2026; the interior needs a timed ticket, sold two months ahead for visits from 2027.
WHY OKINAWA BELONGS AT THE END
A journey through Tokyo and Kyoto is full of early starts, museums, temples and dinners that run late. Placed at the end, Okinawa turns that pace around. The days begin with the sea, the evenings are long and warm, and nothing needs to be seen before noon. It is also simpler to fly there from the mainland and home again from Tokyo or Osaka than to fit the islands into the middle of a route.
The islands are also different in themselves. Okinawa was for centuries the Ryukyu Kingdom, unified in 1429 and ruled from Shuri for about 450 years until 1879, a maritime state that traded with China, Japan, Korea and Southeast Asia. Its food, music, textiles and architecture still show it. A traveler who has seen Kyoto will find in Okinawa a second Japanese culture, which is the reason to go as much as the water.
THE FLIGHTS FROM THE MAINLAND
Visit Okinawa Japan, the prefecture's official site, gives the flight times to Naha as about 2 hours 20 minutes from Haneda, 2 hours 35 minutes from Narita, 1 hour 50 minutes from Kansai and 1 hour 55 minutes from Itami. There are also direct flights from the mainland to the outer islands: Haneda to Ishigaki takes about 3 hours 15 minutes and Haneda to Miyako about 2 hours 55 minutes, with shorter flights from Kansai.
The international flights listed on the same site are all from Asia, so travelers from the United States reach Okinawa through the mainland. That makes the natural shape a mainland journey followed by a domestic flight south, then a flight back to Tokyo or Osaka for the journey home. We plan the last night with care: a late flight from Naha to Haneda before an early departure for America leaves little room for delay.
HOW MANY NIGHTS
Three nights is the shortest stay we recommend, because the day of arrival is mostly travel. Three nights give two full days: one for the sea, one for Shuri, the north of the island or simply rest. Four or five nights suit a journey of two weeks or more, and allow a day on a boat or a second island. Beyond that, Okinawa begins to be a holiday of its own.
WHICH ISLAND FOR WHAT
The main island suits a first visit. Its west coast holds the large resorts within reach of Naha, along with the capital's museums and Shuri Castle. Halekulani Okinawa, in Onna, has 360 rooms, all facing the sea. HOSHINOYA Okinawa, in Yomitan, keeps all its suites and villas on the ground floor, so that the ocean is always in view, with check-in at 15:00 and check-out at 12:00.
Miyako and Ishigaki suit travelers who want clearer water and smaller places. Ishigaki is the gateway to the Yaeyama islands, and both can be reached directly from Tokyo and Osaka, which spares a change in Naha. The honeymoon guide linked above describes these islands and their resorts in more detail.
SHURI CASTLE IN 2027
Shuri Castle was the seat of the Ryukyu kings, and its remains are part of the World Heritage property Gusuku Sites and Related Properties of the Kingdom of Ryukyu, inscribed in December 2000. The main hall was lost to fire in 2019 and has been rebuilt. The park announces that it opens to visitors on November 23, 2026.
From that date, the adult fee is ¥1,000, and seeing the interior needs a ticket with a reserved time. For visits from January 1, 2027, tickets go on sale at 13:00 two months before the day. The park suggests allowing 90 to 120 minutes in all, of which about 15 are inside the hall, and notes that the grounds are busiest from 8:30 to 11:00 and quietest from 12:00 to 14:00 and after 17:00. We reserve the slot as soon as the dates are fixed and plan the afternoon around it.
THE SEASONS AND THE TYPHOONS
Okinawa is warm all year. In Naha the average temperature is 17.3 degrees Celsius in January, 21.5 in April and 29.1 in July, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency. The agency's figures for typhoons approaching Okinawa, averaged over 1991 to 2020, are 1.5 in July, 2.2 in August, 1.9 in September and 1.1 in October, against 0.3 in November and almost none from December to April.
For a journey that ends by the sea, we favor April and November, when the air is mild and typhoons are rare. Summer is beautiful but carries the risk of a typhoon, which can close airports and keep boats in port for a day or two. If the dates fall in the typhoon months, we keep a free day before the flight home.
WHERE STAYGO COMES IN
Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, we decide with you whether Okinawa belongs in the journey, and if so where and for how long, with the flights and the reasons side by side. We then arrange the flights, the resort or villa, the car and driver, the timed ticket for Shuri Castle and a guide where one is wanted, and each is settled with the provider in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day.
Ocean-facing villas at the best resorts are few, and in the spring holidays they go early. We ask for them on your behalf and tell you plainly what has been confirmed.

QUESTIONS TRAVELLERS ASK

Usually at the end. After the cities, the islands give rest, and you can fly home from Tokyo or Osaka after a short domestic flight.
When is typhoon season in Okinawa?
Typhoons approach most often from July to October, with August the peak on average. April and November are calmer choices.
Can I see inside Shuri Castle in 2027?
