For many families in the Gulf, Japan in spring is the trip of the year. Arrivals from the region peak in March and April, and the one month they rarely travel is Ramadan. In 2027 the two sit closer together than usual. Ramadan is expected to end in early March, Kyoto's cherries usually open in the last week of that month, and the gap between them is the time to plan.

This article sets out how the 2027 dates line up: the expected end of Ramadan and Eid al-Fitr, the usual opening of Kyoto's cherries, the UAE school spring break, and what Kyoto offers a family in the weeks after Eid. We read the Japan Meteorological Agency's records, the UAE Ministry of Education's calendar, Gulf press in English and Arabic, and the official pages of hotels, a garden, a boat operator, the Miyako Odori and Kyoto's tourism body, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. RAMADAN AND EID IN 2027

The Umm al-Qura calendar places the first day of Ramadan 1448 on Monday, February 8, 2027, and Eid al-Fitr on Tuesday, March 9, according to Wego's Arabic travel guide, which adds that some countries may begin the month a day later on local sighting. In the UAE, The National reports the same expected start from the country's astronomers and gives Eid as March 9 or 10, depending on whether the month runs 29 or 30 days. Both are projections, and the final dates follow the moon-sighting committees in March.

For a family who keeps the Eid days at home with relatives, the first departure for Japan falls in the days that follow. A flight in the second half of March reaches Kyoto in the week its cherries usually begin to open.

WHEN KYOTO'S CHERRIES OPEN

The Japan Meteorological Agency watches a sample tree in Kyoto every spring. Over the thirty years from 1991 to 2020, its Somei-yoshino opened on March 26 on average and reached full bloom on April 4. Single years move around that: in 2026 the tree was in full bloom on March 30, five days ahead of the average, and in 2025 on April 5.

The UAE Ministry of Education's calendar, published in February 2026, gives the spring break for public schools and most private schools as April 5 to 11, 2027, with classes resuming on April 12. In an average year that week begins on the day of full bloom. In an early year it meets the falling petals and the later trees, which in Kyoto are often the more beautiful sight. THE LATER TREES IN THE NORTHERN HILLS

Kyoto's season does not end with the Somei-yoshino. In Takagamine, in the hills of the city's north, Haradanien opens its cherry garden to visitors only in spring. The garden says the area is cooler than central Kyoto, that its trees stay at their best for about three weeks from April, and that it can be in full flower after the city's cherries have passed. Its finest trees are double-flowered red weeping cherries, among Somei-yoshino, Omuro and mountain cherries, with kerria and azaleas flowering at the same time. The 2027 opening days are not yet announced, and the garden will publish them on its site. The paths are unpaved and steep in places, which is worth knowing for grandparents; we would plan an unhurried morning with the car waiting close by.

Aman Kyoto stands in the same Takagamine district, about thirty minutes by car from Kyoto Station, in a forest garden near Kinkaku-ji. Its two-bedroom Washigamine and Takagamine Pavilions suit a family who want the northern hills as their base for the later trees, and every stay includes the Aman Spa's hot-spring baths.

HOTELS FOR A FAMILY IN SPRING

A large family needs rooms that connect, space to gather, and a garden close at hand. Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto, in the Higashiyama temple district, is built around Shakusui-en, a pond garden it describes as 800 years old, with a tea ceremony held in a pavilion in the garden. Its 110 guest rooms include 48 interconnecting rooms, and it also has 13 suites and 57 hotel residences. The Ritz-Carlton, Kyoto sits on the banks of the Kamo river by the Nijo bridge, with views of the Higashiyama mountains, 134 rooms and suites, an indoor pool and a La Prairie spa.

The newest address is in Gion. The Imperial Hotel, Kyoto opened on March 5, 2026 in the Yasaka Kaikan, a registered tangible cultural property within the grounds of the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo theatre, where the Miyako Odori is danced. Its Imperial Suite measures 193 square metres, including a 65-square-metre terrace looking over the teahouse streets, the theatre and the Higashiyama hills. Its other new neighbours are in New Luxury Hotels in Japan for 2026 and 2027 →, and the districts compared in Where to Stay in Kyoto: The Best Areas for a First Visit →.

THE MIYAKO ODORI IN APRIL

The spring dances of the geiko and maiko of Gion Kobu are Kyoto's best-known spring performance. The 153rd Miyako Odori runs from April 1 to 30, 2027 at the Gion Kobu Kaburenjo, with three performances a day at 12:30, 14:30 and 16:30; the first performances on April 23 and 24 are reserved for a private group. The dance runs for about an hour in eight scenes through the seasons. The first-class seat with tea adds a bowl of tea and a sweet before the performance, in the presence of geiko and maiko, with the sweets plate to take home, and the theatre's strolling garden with its pond, renovated in 2023, can be enjoyed beforehand. Tickets go on sale at 10:00 on January 6, 2027.

Three performance times make it easy to fit the afternoon around prayer and rest. In spring 2026 the Imperial Hotel offered to arrange Miyako Odori tickets for its guests. A private dinner with maiko is a separate evening, and how introductions work is in Maiko Dinner in Kyoto: Introductions, Dances and Gion Rules →.

A PRIVATE BOAT AND FRIDAY PRAYER

The Hozu river runs 16 kilometres through a gorge from Kameoka to Arashiyama, and the boat ride down it takes about 100 minutes, depending on the water. Beside its shared boats, the operator runs RYOUI, a fully private boat for up to eight, with six reclining seats and two spare, on advance reservation. Special menus, including Kyoto cuisine, and drinks of the guests' choice can be prepared when requested ahead. Anyone under 80 centimetres tall, whatever their age, cannot board.

For prayer, Kyoto's official tourism site lists the Kyoto Mosque, run by the Kyoto Muslim Association, near the Imperial Palace. It is open from Tuesday to Saturday, 12:00 to 18:00, and holds Friday prayers at 12:30, 13:00 and 13:30, which the site notes are for men. The association also set up the Kyoto Council for Sharia and Halal Affairs, which certifies restaurants in the city; where to find halal kaiseki and halal wagyu is in Halal Fine Dining in Japan: Halal Wagyu, Kaiseki, Prayer Rooms →.

WHERE STAYGO COMES IN

A Kyoto spring after Eid depends on decisions made in winter: the suites in November and December, the Miyako Odori seats on January 6, and the order of the days once the first cherry forecasts appear. We follow the moon-sighting announcements and the forecasts, and set the gardens, the dance and the river on the days that suit the trees and the family's prayer times. Halal dining is arranged as each family wishes, from no pork and no alcohol to certified kitchens, with one coordinator in English throughout.

Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, a Kyoto spring is often paired with Tokyo or a ryokan with private baths. The hotels, boats, cars, tickets and tables are arranged by us and settled with each of them in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read the pages below on November 5, 2026. Ramadan and Eid dates are projections subject to moon sighting. We did not contact any hotel, garden, theatre, boat operator, mosque or other body.
