The Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route crosses the Northern Alps between Toyama and Nagano on six kinds of transport, from a cable car out of Tateyama Station to an electric bus that comes out of the mountain at Ogizawa. Private cars are not allowed on it. Its operator says a full crossing usually takes six to eight hours with transfers and sightseeing, and the adult one-way fare from Tateyama to Ogizawa was ¥10,940 on its fare table. The 2026 season ran from April 15 to November 30. When we checked on October 31, 2026, the 2027 dates had not yet been published, so any plan for next spring waits on the operator's announcement.
This guide follows the route stage by stage, with the snow corridor at Murodo in spring, the pond of Mikurigaike, the Kurobe Dam discharge season, the Kurobe Gorge Railway after its return to full service, and the new Kurobe Unazuki Canyon Route that links the two. It ends in Toyama city, which The New York Times put on its 52 Places to Go list in 2025. We read every time, fare and date on the operators' own pages on October 31, 2026, and the sources are listed at the end. If you are weighing the Alps against other places after Tokyo and Kyoto, Beyond Tokyo and Kyoto sets out the options.
Key points
- The 2026 season ran April 15 to November 30. The 2027 dates were not yet announced on October 31, 2026.
- The six rides between Tateyama and Ogizawa add up to about 95 minutes, but the operator plans six to eight hours for the whole crossing with transfers and stops.
- The snow corridor at Murodo can be walked from mid-April to late June. In 2026 the Yuki-no-Otani walk ran until June 25 and the wall stood about 12 m high on opening day.
- Kurobe Dam, 186 m high, releases water for visitors from late June to mid-October; in 2026 it ran June 26 to October 15.
- The Kurobe Gorge Railway returned to full service between Unazuki and Keyakidaira on October 1, 2026, and the Kurobe Unazuki Canyon Route to Kurobe Dam opened to the public, by tour only, the next day.
LET US ARRANGE YOUR DAYS IN TATEYAMA AND TOYAMA →
GETTING THERE AND WHICH WAY TO CROSS
The route has two ends, Tateyama Station on the Toyama side and Ogizawa on the Nagano side, and the operator recommends travelling it one way. Both ends connect back to the Hokuriku Shinkansen, so a crossing fits neatly between Tokyo and Kanazawa, or between Kanazawa and Matsumoto.
From the Toyama side
JR West gives 2 hours 8 minutes between Toyama and Tokyo on the Hokuriku Shinkansen; the Alpine Route's own access map rounds it to about 2 hours 10 minutes. From Dentetsu-Toyama Station, next to the JR station, a Toyama Chiho Railway train takes about an hour to Tateyama Station. Kanazawa is on the same line to the west, and the access map gives about 1 hour 20 minutes from Tsuruga by shinkansen and about 1 hour 20 minutes from Osaka to Tsuruga by the Thunderbird limited express. Starting here means the climb comes first and the dam comes last.
From the Nagano side
On the operator's access map, the express bus from Nagano Station to Ogizawa takes about 1 hour 45 minutes, and Nagano is about 1 hour 25 minutes from Tokyo by shinkansen. Travellers coming from Matsumoto take the Oito Line to Shinano-Omachi, about 55 minutes, then a local bus to Ogizawa, about 40 minutes. Starting from Nagano puts Kurobe Dam at the beginning of the day and Murodo in the middle.
The car and the bags
Because private vehicles are prohibited between Tateyama Station and Ogizawa, a driver who brings you to one end cannot follow you across. The operator runs a vehicle transfer service, and a car can meet you at the far side. Luggage can travel separately the same day: the route's own forwarding service runs from Dentetsu-Toyama Station or hotels near Tateyama Station to Shinano-Omachi Station or the Omachi hot spring hotels for ¥4,000 per item, cash only. In 2026 it ran from April 15 to November 8. Bags left at Dentetsu-Toyama between 5:00 and 10:00 can be collected at Shinano-Omachi between 15:00 and 17:45, or the next day. Forwarding across Japan more generally is covered in Luggage forwarding in Japan.
THE ROUTE STAGE BY STAGE
These are the operator's own figures for each leg, from west to east. The table lists no ride between Kurobeko and Kurobe Dam; that short stretch is on foot.
| Stage | Transport | Time | Distance | Height gained or lost |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Tateyama – Bijodaira | Tateyama Cable Car | 7 min | 1.3 km | 502 m |
| Bijodaira – Murodo | Tateyama Highland Bus | 50 min | 23 km | 1,473 m |
| Murodo – Daikanbo | Tateyama Tunnel Electric Bus | 10 min | 3.7 km | 134 m |
| Daikanbo – Kurobedaira | Tateyama Ropeway | 7 min | 1.7 km | 488 m |
| Kurobedaira – Kurobeko | Kurobe Cable Car | 5 min | 0.8 km | 373 m |
| Kurobe Dam – Ogizawa | Kanden Tunnel Electric Bus | 16 min | 6.1 km | 37 m |
Where the hours go. The rides add up to about 95 minutes. The rest of the six to eight hours goes on queues at each change, a walk at Murodo, the view from Daikanbo and the dam. Only two legs need a set boarding time: the cable car from Tateyama Station and the electric bus from Ogizawa. Web tickets let you choose that time when you buy; other tickets take a time at the station window.
The fare. On the operator's table, current as of February 27, 2026, one adult from Tateyama to Ogizawa is ¥10,940 one way, and Ogizawa to Murodo is ¥6,850. The operator notes that fares can change.
The cold. Murodo is at 2,450 m and, the operator says, about 15°C cooler than sea level. Its average lows are around -3°C in April and 11°C in July, with August highs around 18°C. A warm layer belongs in the day bag in every month.
MURODO, THE SNOW CORRIDOR AND MIKURIGAIKE
Murodo is the high point of the route and the place most people stop longest. The bus from Bijodaira climbs through Midagahara and arrives at the Murodo terminal; from there walking paths lead out across the plateau below Mount Tateyama.
The snow corridor
The road up to Murodo is cleared of snow each spring, and the cut leaves walls on either side known as Yuki-no-Otani. The operator says the snow walls can be seen from mid-April until late June, with the highest point about a 15-minute walk from the entrance after you leave the bus. On April 15, 2026, Kyodo News reported the wall at about 12 m that year, and the walking event along the road ran until June 25. The height changes every year with the snowfall, and the operator warns that the snow wall season is especially busy, so it asks travellers to allow extra time.
Mikurigaike
Mikurigaike is a crater pond about 15 minutes on foot from the Murodo terminal, according to the operator. Its circumference is about 630 m and it is 15 m deep. On a still day the peaks behind it lie in the water, and in autumn the colour on the slopes doubles in the surface. The creeping pine around it is home to the rock ptarmigan, which the operator says you may see if you are lucky.
Staying up high
Hotel Tateyama at Murodo, which opened in 1972, ended its overnight accommodation on August 31, 2026, Traicy reported; its restaurants and shop stay open. A night on the plateau now means a mountain lodge, and most travellers who want comfort sleep in Toyama, at Unazuki or on the Omachi side and give the crossing a full day.
KUROBE DAM
At the eastern end of the high section the Kurobe Cable Car drops through the mountain to Kurobeko, on the shore of Lake Kurobe, and a short walk leads to the dam and the station for the Ogizawa bus. Kurobe Dam is 186 m high, the highest dam wall in Japan, according to Kyodo News. Kansai Electric Power built it.
The discharge. For part of the year water is released from the dam for visitors, in a spray that arches out into the gorge. In 2026 the season ran from June 26 to October 15, with more than 10 tonnes of water a second, Kyodo reported on the opening day. Weather can stop it on a given day. A crossing between late June and mid-October passes the dam while the water is running.
The order of the day. From the Toyama side you reach the dam in the afternoon; from Nagano it is the first stop, about 16 minutes from Ogizawa. If the dam matters more to you than Murodo, start from Nagano and see it while you are fresh.
THE KUROBE GORGE RAILWAY AND THE CANYON ROUTE
North of the dam, the Kurobe River runs through a deep gorge to the hot spring town of Unazuki. The Kurobe Gorge Railway runs its trolley trains along it.
Back to Keyakidaira
The Noto Peninsula earthquake of January 2024 damaged the line, and since then trains had turned back short of the end. On October 1, 2026 the railway resumed full service from Unazuki to Keyakidaira. Trains now stop only at Unazuki, Kuronagi, Kanetsuri and Keyakidaira; Nekomata is no longer a stop. Repairs continue below Keyakidaira, so visitors there may go only to the station building and the visitor centre, and the railway suggests allowing about an hour. On the autumn timetable the trip takes 76 to 82 minutes each way. The adult fare is ¥2,480 one way in an ordinary car, plus ¥600 a ride for a relax car. The 2026 season to Keyakidaira ends on November 30, with trains to Sasadaira only from December 1 to 6. The railway had not published its 2027 season when we checked.
The Kurobe Unazuki Canyon Route
Between Keyakidaira and Kurobe Dam runs a construction route that Nihon Denryoku and Kansai Electric built for the Kurobe No. 3 and No. 4 power stations, long used only for the power works. Under a 2018 agreement between Kansai Electric and Toyama Prefecture it has been made safe for visitors, and Toyama Prefecture opened it to the public on October 2, 2026, after a delay caused by the earthquake. It can be travelled only on a tour sold by travel agencies, between Keyakidaira and Kurobe Dam. FRaU, in a sponsored feature, describes about 18 km and some 2 hours 20 minutes on five kinds of vehicle: a vertical shaft elevator rising about 200 m, the Kounetsu tunnel where the rock exceeded 160°C during construction and is still around 40°C, the Sennin-dani Dam, and an incline climbing about 500 m. Travel Watch reported about 2,700 places for the first season, which runs to November 30, 2026. JTB has opened a lounge at Keyakidaira Station for tour guests, where helmets are handed out. Prices and the 2027 season had not been published on the route's own site when we checked.
Joined together, the gorge railway, the Canyon Route and the Alpine Route make a two- or three-day traverse from Unazuki over the dam to Murodo and down to Toyama.
TOYAMA CITY
In January 2025 The New York Times listed Toyama 30th of its 52 Places to Go, in a piece by Craig Mod that described the city as cradled between the Japanese Alps and the Sea of Japan, according to the Toyama city tourism association. The Times pointed to the glass museum, the Owara Kaze no Bon dance festival in Yatsuo in early September, and a handful of small places to eat and drink.
Toyama Glass Art Museum
The museum shares a building, TOYAMA Kirari, with the city library and a bank. Kengo Kuma and Associates completed it in 2015 around a diagonal void lined with local cedar, which brings daylight down through the floors. The permanent exhibition is open 9:30 to 18:00, with last entry 30 minutes before, and closes on the first and third Wednesdays and over the New Year holidays. Entry to the collection galleries is ¥200 for an adult and includes the Glass Art Garden on the sixth floor, where the permanent works include Dale Chihuly's Toyama Mille Fiori. The Nishicho tram stop is about a minute's walk away.
The bay
Toyama Bay supplies the city's counters with white shrimp and firefly squid in their seasons. A dinner in Toyama is a natural end to the crossing, and Kanazawa, covered in Kanazawa, is a short shinkansen ride further on.
SEASONS AND WHERE TO STAY
Spring, mid-April to June. The snow corridor is the reason most people come. The plateau is still white, and April lows at Murodo are around -3°C.
Summer, July and August. The dam discharge and the mildest weather at height, with August highs around 18°C at Murodo. This is the season for walking around Mikurigaike.
Autumn, September to November. Mikurigaike reflects the autumn colour on the slopes. The discharge ends in mid-October, the gorge railway runs to Keyakidaira until November 30, and the Alpine Route closes at the end of November. In 2026 the route moved to a winter timetable from November 4, and the luggage service stopped after November 8. Other seasons in Japan are compared in The best time to visit Japan by season.
Where to stay
