A family from the Gulf arrives in Japan with a clear picture of how the trip should feel. The whole family under one roof, with doors that close between its branches. Women able to move without being seen by strangers. Prayer at its times, food that can be trusted, cars waiting, and someone who answers every request in English before it becomes a problem. Japan does all of this well, provided the rooms, cars and days are chosen with the family in mind from the start.
This article sets out how we shape a first journey to Japan for a family from the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar or Kuwait: the suites in Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka that hold a family, how privacy works in practice, where to pray and what each mosque asks of visitors, the direct flights and the 2027 calendar. We read hotels' and mosques' own pages, the Japan National Tourism Organization's statistics and statements, airline and trade press in English, Japanese and Arabic, and a car company's published rates, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. Food is covered in Halal Fine Dining in Japan: Halal Wagyu, Kaiseki, Prayer Rooms →.
Key points
- Visitors from the Middle East reached 257,200 in 2025, up 54.7%, and those from the six Gulf states were about double 2019. Families stay ten days to two weeks.

- Connecting rooms make the family's own floor. At Four Seasons Osaka the connecting door can be locked from either side.
- Tokyo Camii welcomes visitors daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Groups of five or more apply in advance, and outside guides may not lead tours inside.

HOW GULF FAMILIES TRAVEL IN JAPAN
The numbers are young and rising quickly. The Japan National Tourism Organization counted 257,200 visitors from the Middle East in 2025, up 54.7% on 2024, and says that visitors from the six Gulf Cooperation Council states in 2025 were about double the 2019 figure. In September 2026 it signed a memorandum with Emirates in Dubai to build on that.
Daisuke Kobayashi, who heads the organisation's Dubai office, has described the shape of these journeys in the Japanese press. Families come for ten days to two weeks, mostly to Tokyo, Kyoto and Osaka on a first visit. Travel peaks in March and April, eases in summer and returns in autumn, and continues all year apart from Ramadan. He also noted that a butler-like person who answers requests flexibly during the stay is welcome.
For 2027, press in the UAE projects that Ramadan will begin around February 8 and that Eid al-Fitr will fall on March 9 or 10, subject to the sighting of the moon. A family travelling after Eid reaches Kyoto at the start of the cherry blossom season, and those weeks are the ones to secure first.
SUITES THAT HOLD A FAMILY IN TOKYO
The Peninsula Tokyo. The Peninsula Suite is 347 m², with a balcony, a grand piano and dining for twelve; the Hibiya Suite is 298 m² with a table for twelve. A Connecting Deluxe Suite of 179 m² and a Grand Premier Suite of 116 m², which the hotel describes as ideal for families, let a family spread across several rooms. The hotel's own fleet includes two Rolls-Royce Phantoms and a Toyota Century.
Four Seasons Hotel Tokyo at Otemachi. The Imperial Suite is 283 m² and a Two-Bedroom Otemachi Suite 162 m². The hotel offers connecting rooms for multigenerational families, including with its Imperial and Panoramic suites.
Aman Tokyo. Of its 84 suites, the largest is the Aman Suite at 157 m² and the Grand Suite 141 m², high above Otemachi. It suits a smaller family, or the parents within a larger party housed across two hotels.
KYOTO AND OSAKA
Four Seasons Hotel Kyoto. The Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite, 245 m², is described by the hotel as Kyoto's largest hotel suite and connects to further rooms. Its two-bedroom Residences, 150 to 180 m², have a kitchen and a washer and take up to five adults, which suits a family staying a week.
Aman Kyoto. The hotel has 26 rooms from 60 m². Its Washigamine Pavilion is 241 m², with two bedrooms each with its own bathroom, a tatami room and a kitchen, at the most secluded point of the grounds.
Four Seasons Hotel Osaka. The Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite is 306 m² for six guests. The hotel notes that the connecting door can be locked from either side, a small detail that matters when grown children, parents and staff share a floor.
PRIVACY IN PRACTICE
A floor of one's own. We plan the rooms as a block: the parents' suite at the centre, connecting rooms for children and grandparents, and rooms for nannies or staff on the same corridor. We ask hotels to keep housekeeping and deliveries to the times the family sets.
Women's privacy. We ask for female staff where the family prefers it, for in-suite dining in place of the restaurant on any evening, and for spa or salon hours with no other guests. At a ryokan, a room with its own open-air bath replaces the shared bath; Mr Kobayashi notes that this is exactly what families from the region ask for. Our guide to these rooms is Ryokan With a Private Onsen for the Whole Family →.
Cars. A large family moves in two or three vehicles. In Kyoto, MK Taxi's HiAce VIP seats up to nine with five large suitcases, with English-speaking drivers available, from 22,400 yen for its one-hour minimum within the city and 58,900 yen to or from Kansai Airport, tolls and parking extra. Costs across Japan are in Private Driver in Japan Cost: Tokyo, Airport and Day Trip Rates →.
PRAYER ON THE ROAD
Tokyo Camii. Japan's best-known mosque, a five-minute walk from Yoyogi-Uehara Station, traces its history to 1938. It is open to visitors daily from 10:00 to 18:00 without reservation; groups of five or more must apply for a visit, at least a week ahead on weekdays. Visitors dress modestly, women cover their hair in the prayer hall, and the upper floor is for women. The mosque states that tours inside may not be led by outside guides, so a family visits with the mosque's own guidance, and free tours in Japanese run at 14:30 on weekends and holidays.
Kobe Muslim Mosque. Founded on August 2, 1935, it describes itself as the first and oldest mosque in Japan, and it came through both the wartime bombing and the 1995 earthquake. The upper floor of the prayer hall is for women. Kobe is an easy stop between Kyoto and Osaka.
On the road, we plan the day around prayer times, with a quiet room held at a hotel or restaurant where possible. Prayer rooms at airports and stations, and how to find the qibla, are set out in our halal dining guide.
FLIGHTS AND THE FIRST DAY
Emirates flies from Dubai to Narita, Haneda and Osaka Kansai, and was the first airline to link Japan and the UAE, in 2002. Etihad has flown the A380 from Abu Dhabi to Narita since June 2026. Saudia begins flights from Riyadh to Narita on November 17, 2026, three times a week. Qatar Airways also links Doha with Japan; we confirm its current schedule when we plan.
The first day decides much of the trip. We meet the family on arrival, send the luggage ahead in a separate vehicle, and have the suites ready on arrival so that the family can rest, pray and eat before anything else.
WHERE STAYGO COMES IN
Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, we draw the family's rooms, cars and days on one page with the reasons for each choice, then arrange the hotels, the cars, the kitchens and the visits. One coordinator answers in English throughout the stay. Hotels and services are settled with each of them in the simplest way available, usually on the hotel bill or on the day.

QUESTIONS FAMILIES ASK
Which hotels in Japan have suites large enough for a family?
Among others, the Peninsula Suite in Tokyo is 347 m², the Two-Bedroom Presidential Suite at Four Seasons Osaka is 306 m² for six, and Four Seasons Kyoto's 245 m² suite connects to further rooms.
Can we visit a mosque in Tokyo?
Yes. Tokyo Camii is open to visitors daily from 10:00 to 18:00. Groups of five or more apply in advance, women cover their hair in the prayer hall, and outside guides may not lead tours inside.
When is the best time for a Gulf family to visit Japan in 2027?
Spring after Eid al-Fitr, expected around March 9 or 10, 2027, meets the cherry blossoms. Autumn is the other favourite. Summer suits cooler Hokkaido better than Tokyo or Kyoto.
Are there direct flights from the Gulf to Japan?
Yes. Emirates flies from Dubai to Narita, Haneda and Osaka, Etihad from Abu Dhabi to Narita, and Saudia from Riyadh to Narita from November 2026. Qatar Airways also serves Japan.
Can the hotels keep the family's privacy?
Largely, yes. Connecting rooms, a block on one floor, in-suite dining and set housekeeping times give a family most of the privacy of a house. For more, see whole villas and ryokan.
