From Dubai, Abu Dhabi, Doha and now Riyadh, Japan is a single overnight flight away. The choice that shapes the trip is rarely the airline alone. It is the cabin, the airport you land at, what happens in the first hour on the ground and how the first day is kept gentle for grandparents and children after a long night in the air.

This article sets out the direct routes from the Gulf as they stand in November 2026, the cabins worth choosing, arriving by private jet, the entry rules for UAE, Qatari and Saudi travellers and how we shape the first twenty-four hours. We read the airlines' own announcements, the airport operators' pages, Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs and trade press in English and Japanese, and contacted none of them; the sources are listed at the end. For when to begin planning, see How Far in Advance to Plan a Luxury Japan Trip →.

THE DIRECT ROUTES FROM THE GULF TODAY

Emirates has the longest history on the route. In October 2002 it became the first airline to link Japan and the Gulf region with non-stop flights, beginning with Osaka. In its October 2026 announcement the airline states that it flies directly between Dubai and three Japanese airports: Narita and Haneda for Tokyo, and Kansai for Osaka and Kyoto. From 26 October 2026 it scheduled an additional Narita service, bringing its passenger flights to and from Japan to 28 a week.

Etihad brought its Airbus A380 to Tokyo in June 2026, flying daily between Abu Dhabi and Narita; the airline marked the first arrival at Narita on 18 June. Qatar Airways restored its Japan schedule in stages after a pause earlier in 2026, announcing a return to Kansai in June, a return to Haneda in July with daily flights from August, and more flights to Narita. Saudia adds a direct link from Saudi Arabia in November 2026, with three flights a week between King Khalid International Airport in Riyadh and Narita.

Schedules change by season, so we confirm the flight on the airline's own site at the time of planning and build the first day around its actual arrival time.

THE CABINS WORTH CHOOSING

For a family that values privacy, the most distinctive seat between the Gulf and Japan is on Etihad's A380 to Narita. Its release describes The Residence as the world's only three-room suite in the sky, with a living room, a bedroom and an ensuite bathroom with a shower, for up to two guests. Behind it are nine First Apartments and 70 Business Studios on the upper deck. Etihad says this is the first time The Residence has flown to Japan. For a large party, a mix of The Residence for grandparents, First Apartments for parents and Business Studios for older children keeps everyone on the same aircraft and the same arrival.

Emirates adds something that matters as much as the seat: what happens after landing. Its Chauffeur-Drive service, free for First Class and Business Class customers on eligible Emirates-operated flights, now runs from all three of its Japan airports. Haneda came first, Narita was added on 1 February 2026 and Kansai on 1 March 2026. Each journey covers up to 100 driven kilometres; from Kansai the area includes most of Osaka, Nara, Kyoto and Hyogo, which means a car straight from the aircraft to a Kyoto hotel. At Narita, Emirates premium passengers also have the airline's own lounge in Terminal 2.

For a family of ten with luggage for two weeks, we plan the cars separately, as described below.

ARRIVING BY PRIVATE JET

JAL Business Aviation, the JAL group's private jet company, lists Haneda, Narita and Kansai as open around the clock, each with a base for business aviation. It describes the passenger route: no check-in counter, an escort straight through security and immigration, and departure and arrival procedures it puts at about 90 minutes shorter than on scheduled flights. Where an airport has no dedicated facility, the commercial terminal is used with the same escort.

The same company arranges charters within Japan and onward from a scheduled flight, so a family can land in Tokyo on Etihad or Emirates and continue by private jet to another city without returning to a terminal queue. It has also offered luxury helicopter charters in the Kansai region. For a party arriving on its own aircraft, ground handling at the major airports is available through the same channel. We coordinate the car and the hotel around the jet's slot, so that the arrival feels like one movement.

HANEDA NARITA OR KANSAI

The airport decides the first hour on the road. JAL Business Aviation's airport table, drawn from Japan's aeronautical information, gives Haneda as 14 km from Tokyo Station and Narita as 57 km. Kansai is 38 km from Osaka Station. Haneda therefore suits a family heading straight to a Tokyo hotel; Narita is the gateway for Etihad and Saudia and asks for a longer drive; Kansai is the natural arrival for a journey that begins in Kyoto or Osaka and ends in Tokyo, or the reverse.

For a large family we arrange vehicles sized to the party, usually a large people carrier for the family and a second vehicle for the luggage, with the driver waiting at arrivals. Larger cases can also be sent ahead by courier from the airport so that they reach the hotel the next day; timing and options are in Luggage Forwarding in Japan: Sending Bags Between Hotels and the Airport →, and the cost of a car and driver is in Private Driver in Japan Cost: Tokyo, Airport and Day Trip Rates →.

PASSPORTS AND THE ARRIVAL FORMS

Japan's Ministry of Foreign Affairs lists the United Arab Emirates among the countries with visa exemption for short stays: UAE nationals holding an ePassport that meets international standards may stay up to 90 days without a visa. Qatar is on the same list with a different rule: Qatari nationals must first register their ePassport with a Japanese embassy or consulate, and the stay granted is 30 days. Residents of Saudi Arabia can apply online through the JAPAN eVISA system for a single-entry tourist visa of up to 90 days; the visa notice must be shown on a phone with an internet connection at the airport, as a screenshot or printout is not accepted. Residents of the UAE who are not UAE nationals and need a visa apply through an accredited agency. Rules for other nationalities differ, so for each traveller we start from the ministry's own page.

Visit Japan Web, run by Japan's Digital Agency, lets travellers complete the immigration and customs procedures online before arrival. For a family we send a short checklist for each traveller a few days before departure, so that no one is filling in forms at the airport with a sleeping child.

THE FIRST TWENTY FOUR HOURS

Japan is five hours ahead of the UAE and six hours ahead of Saudi Arabia and Qatar. That is a gentle difference by long-haul standards, but after an overnight flight it still asks for a quiet first day. We plan it in four parts: arrive, rest, pray, eat.

Prayer can begin at the airport. Haneda lists prayer rooms with facilities for ablution in Terminal 2 international and Terminal 3; Narita lists prayer rooms in all three terminals, before and after security; Kansai has prayer rooms on the third floor and in the international gate area of Terminal 1, with prayer and ablution spaces separated for men and women. At the hotel we ask in advance for the direction of prayer and prayer mats to be ready in the rooms.

Most hotels in Japan give their rooms from mid-afternoon. When a flight lands in the morning or around midday, we ask the hotel for early access to the rooms or for a day room where the family can sleep; the hotel decides on the day, so we hold a quiet lunch nearby as a second plan. The first meal is kept simple and close: a private room at the hotel or a restaurant we have already asked about ingredients, with no pork and no alcohol in the cooking as the minimum, and halal-certified kitchens on request. What we look for in a kitchen is in Halal Fine Dining in Japan: Halal Wagyu, Kaiseki, Prayer Rooms →. Nothing is scheduled for the first evening that cannot be cancelled with a message.

WHERE STAYGO COMES IN

Gulf travel to Japan is growing quickly. In September 2026 the Japan National Tourism Organization signed a memorandum with Emirates to promote travel from the Middle East, noting that visitors from the GCC states in 2025 were about twice the number in 2019. For 2027 the routes above give more choice than ever, and the first day is where a journey either settles or frays.

Within Signature, our planning for journeys of 7 to 21 days, one coordinator in English follows the family from the flight choice to the last departure: cabins matched to each generation, the airport chosen for the first hotel, cars and luggage at arrivals, prayer and meals planned into the first day, and early rooms asked for in advance. The hotels, cars, couriers and restaurants are arranged by us and settled with each of them in the simplest way available, usually on your hotel bill or on the day. For the overall shape of a first visit, see First Time in Japan: The Luxury Traveller's Complete Guide →.

SOURCES AND HOW WE CHECKED

We read the pages below on November 5, 2026. Schedules are as announced by the airlines and can change by season. We did not contact any airline, airport or other body.

QUESTIONS TRAVELLERS ASK

Which Gulf airlines fly directly to Japan?

Emirates flies from Dubai to Narita, Haneda and Kansai, Etihad from Abu Dhabi to Narita and Qatar Airways from Doha to Haneda, Narita and Kansai. Saudia begins direct flights from Riyadh to Narita in November 2026, three times a week.

Does Etihad fly The Residence to Tokyo?

Yes. Etihad's A380 has flown daily between Abu Dhabi and Narita since June 2026, and the airline says it brought The Residence, a three-room suite for up to two guests, to Japan for the first time.

Do UAE, Qatari and Saudi travellers need a visa for Japan?

UAE nationals with an ePassport need no visa for stays of up to 90 days. Qatari nationals need to register their ePassport with a Japanese mission first and receive 30 days. Residents of Saudi Arabia can apply online for a single-entry JAPAN eVISA for tourism of up to 90 days.

Is Haneda or Narita better for central Tokyo?

Haneda is closer, about 14 km from Tokyo Station against about 57 km for Narita. Narita is the arrival airport for Etihad and Saudia, so a longer drive is part of the plan.

Can we check in to the hotel on arrival in the morning?

Most hotels give rooms from mid-afternoon. We ask the hotel in advance for early access or a day room; the hotel decides on the day, so we also hold a quiet lunch nearby.
