A dim bedroom with a low bed and a single wall light

A Japandi bedroom in Tokyo

Dim, quiet and simple, with light that stays soft at night.

How we think about the bedroom

A bedroom is the room you use with the least light, so we plan it for the evening first.

Warm minimalism here is a low bed or a futon (a folding floor mattress) on tatami (woven rush mats), bedding in natural cloth and one or two lamps at hand height.

We keep ma (the space between things) on purpose: few pieces, storage out of sight and nothing on the floor to trip over at night.

Sample photos for reference. They are not rooms we have furnished.

What goes in the room

  • A low bed or a futon

A low wooden frame with a good mattress, or a futon on tatami that folds away in the day.

    About Hinoki
  • Bedding in natural cloth

Cotton and linen that breathe in humid summers, with indigo for colour.

    About Indigo
  • Lamps at hand height

Bedside lamps with paper or fabric shades, so the light stays soft.

    About Washi
  • Storage out of sight

Closed storage so the room stays quiet, sized to the built-in cupboards most Japanese bedrooms already have.

In a home in Japan

Nothing tall above the bed

The Tokyo Fire Department advises keeping tall furniture away from where you sleep and fixing it to the wall. We plan the bed first and the storage around it.

Air the bedding

Futon and tatami take in moisture. Airing the futon and keeping the room ventilated helps prevent mould in humid months.

Ventilation when you are away

Most apartments built since 2003 have a 24-hour ventilation system. Leaving it on while the home is empty helps keep the bedroom dry.

Deciding from abroad

The bed, the bedding and the lamps can all be chosen from photos and fabric samples we post to you.

We make the bed before you arrive, so the first night in the home is ready.

One way to split the budget

A sample only. If a home had a furnishing budget of ¥5,000,000 (about US$31,650), the bedroom might take about ¥900,000 (about US$5,700) of it, divided like this.

Bed or futon and mattress¥400,000 about US$2,530
Bedding¥150,000 about US$950
Bedside lamps¥100,000 about US$630
Storage¥250,000 about US$1,580
Total for this room¥900,000 about US$5,700

Sample allocation. It is not a quote and not a price list. Your plan is built from your own home and your own priorities.

Dollar amounts are a guide only, at ¥158 to US$1 (October 2026). Makers and firms charge in yen.
