Hinoki
Japanese cypress. Pale, fragrant and long-lasting.
What it is
Hinoki (Japanese cypress) is a pale, straight-grained softwood that grows in Japan. It has a clean, light scent that lasts for years.
It resists rot well, which is why it has long been used for baths, bath stools and the inside of temples. Many pieces are still made by hand in the spirit of mingei (Japanese folk craft): plain, useful and meant for every day.
Where it works in a home
Wall and ceiling panels, bath stools and buckets, tables, shelves and the frames of screens.

Choosing it
Solid or veneer
Ask whether a piece is solid hinoki or a thin layer over another wood. Both have a place, at different prices.
Knots and grain
Boards without knots are rarer and cost more. Small knots are part of the wood and do not weaken it.
Finish
Unfinished hinoki keeps its scent. Oiled hinoki resists marks better.
Care, and a piece that travels
Wipe it dry
Standing water marks the pale surface. Wipe spills and dry bath pieces after use.
Often left unfinished
Much hinoki is left untreated so the scent stays. Light marks can often be sanded away.
Dry indoor air
Strong heating or air conditioning can make solid wood shrink and crack. Keep pieces away from heaters and vents.
Sun and colour
Direct sun slowly darkens and yellows the wood over time.
