The experience
Mt. Takao is 599 metres high and has been a mountain of worship for centuries. Yakuo-in, a temple founded in 744, stands about halfway up. Your guide is an internationally certified mountain guide from Tokyo Yamagawa DMC.
You ride the cable car up and walk to Yakuo-in, where you attend the Ogoma fire ritual in the main hall and hear a talk by a priest. Lunch is shojin cuisine in the temple's guest hall: ten small dishes and a dessert, made without meat or fish.
Then the summit, where Mt. Fuji shows on clear days, and down through the forest with a break for Yakuo-in herbal tea and local sweets. The tour ends at Takaosan Station, and you choose to walk down or ride.
