The experience

Domyo has dyed and braided silk cord by hand in Ueno since 1652, and it also studies the history of kumihimo, a craft that goes back to the seventh century. The visit is private, and Domyo takes up to six guests a day.

After a short introduction you go through the five-storey workshop: silk dyed by hand and hung to dry, then braided on wooden stands on the second floor. These floors are not usually shown to the public. The tour ends in the shop on the ground floor.

In a private room you braid a Maruyatsu-gumi cord on a wooden frame with an artisan, choosing from the colour combinations of the day. A bracelet is yours the same day. Earrings are finished by the artisans and posted, which can take more than two months.

What STAYGO does

  • We arrange the visit through Wabunka, the booking site Domyo uses, and keep in touch with them about your date.
  • We place it on a Tokyo day that suits it and plan how you get to Ueno.
  • We tell Domyo whether you would like gold and silver thread in your braid.

This experience is paid in advance by credit card, in yen, through Wabunka, at the price they show. STAYGO adds nothing to it. Postage for earrings is paid on the day.

Arranged only as part of a STAYGO journey.

Details checked on the host's published page on 13 October 2026. Hosts set their own prices and terms and may change them. We confirm them again when we arrange your date, and nothing is confirmed until the host accepts it.

You pay hotels, ryokan, restaurants and guides directly, at their own rates. We add no markups and take no commissions. The Signature planning fee is USD 3,500 for your group, for a journey of 7–14 days. Longer or more complex journeys are planned as Bespoke.
