Six hours north of Tokyo, and a different country by dinner.
Silver mining towns, milk-white onsen, and a World Heritage site with almost nobody in it.
Day 1
Yamagata: Arrival + Ginzan Onsen
Shinkansen from Tokyo to Yamagata. Transfer to Ginzan Onsen, a preserved Taisho-era silver mining town, wooden ryokans lining a river gorge. In winter, lanterns glow in the snow.
Day 2
Zao: The Snow Monsters
Drive to Zao Onsen, famous for its 'juhyo,' trees coated in ice and snow until they resemble monsters. Cable car up through the clouds.
Day 3
Yamadera: The Cliff Temple
Morning climb to Yamadera, temple buildings built into a cliff face, 1,000 steps above the valley floor. The poet Basho came here in 1689. The silence still holds.
Day 4
Akita: Sake, Samurai and Tradition
Private tour of a sake brewery operating since the Edo period. Afternoon in the old samurai district. Evening: Akita's kiritanpo hot pot at a restaurant open for eighty years.
Day 5
Kakunodate: Japan's Most Beautiful Samurai Town
Drive to Kakunodate, the finest preserved samurai town in Japan, almost unknown to foreign visitors. Cherry trees lining samurai streets. A kabazaiku cherry bark craft workshop.
Day 6
Tazawako: Japan's Deepest Lake
A day at Lake Tazawa, Japan's deepest lake, cobalt blue year-round. Kayak in summer, snowshoe in winter. Lunch at a restaurant serving the same buckwheat noodles for four generations.
Day 7–8
Hiraizumi: Japan's Forgotten World Heritage
Drive south to Hiraizumi, a UNESCO site that once rivalled Kyoto, now visited by a fraction of tourists. Chusonji Temple's Golden Hall. Return to Tokyo by shinkansen on day eight.
